DJI has now officially announced the successor to their <250g DJI Mini 2. And in what will come as a surprise to absolutely nobody, it’s called the DJI Mini 3… Pro. I’m not sure what makes this “Pro” or if there’ll be a non-pro version coming at some point (perhaps as a successor to the Mini SE?), but DJI’s announcement today doesn’t actually reveal much that hadn’t already been leaked over the last couple of weeks – including a complete unboxing and first flight....

It appears that DJI’s newest toy isn’t a drone at all, but a battle robot kit you build yourself. Ok, so you don’t have to go sign up for Robot Wars with this thing, and you can probably configure it a bunch of different ways. But apparently it’s called the DJI Robomaster S1 and it’ll cost $499. The news comes via DroningON after being leaked by VentureBeat and PocketNow when their pre-prepared announcement articles went live a little early....

The DJI Spark was announced in July 2017, and many felt it was a little underwhelming, especially since the DJI Mavic Air was announced just six months later in January 2018. The price point of the Mavic Air made it clear that this was not a Spark replacement, but it did make the shortcomings of the Spark more noticeable. The DJI Spark 2 was expected to be announced at some point last month, but that announcement was rumoured to be delayed....

Natural light is probably what most of us begin with when we are starting to get into portrait photography. It makes sense. But there are also category winners and special prize winners, and I’m sure you’ll love them just as much. Mike takes most of his photos underwater, usually with a wide-angle or a fisheye lens. I think for most people, no matter how many comparisons or examples come out, the whole “actual camera vs smartphone camera” debate will never end. Every other new phone seems to be hailed as a “DSLR Killer” by social media. It’s only lately we’ve seen these sorts of claims from manufacturers themselves, though. It was a key selling point of the Huawei P9 and Apple say the iPhone 7 Plus shoots “DSLR quality pictures”....

I’m sure that most of us agree that each dog has its own personality. If you ask me, I love it when photographers manage to capture those animal personalities in photos. German photographer Elke Vogelsang does it, but she brings out the funny side of her four-legged models. Her dog portraits are adorable, fun, and as goofy as it gets. If they don’t put a smile on your face, I don’t know what will....

Choosing a backdrop for use in the studio largely comes down to personal preference. I rarely shoot in the studio, so I tend to go with cloth backdrops. For those who do it regularly, though, paper is the optimum choice. In terms of cost and ease of use, there’s really nothing out there that beats it. But some people get put off using paper, for one reason or another. Mostly due to a simple lack of knowledge....

A week or so ago, Resource magazine published a pretty in-depth article into what’s going on with F-Stop Gear. More specifically, their long overdue KitSentry Kickstarter project. Now, F-Stop Gear has announced an end to the project. F-Stop Gear also stated that they will not be reimbursing backers. The KitSentry looked very promising. After announcing 3D photos and VR memories back in May, Facebook is now rolling out the feature that can turn your 2D photos into 3D. The new feature will work both in the News Feed and VR. The technology captures the distance between the subject and the background, so it brings scenes of 2D photos to life with 3D depth and movement. If you want to turn a 2D image into 3D, you need to take a photo in Portrait mode using a dual-lens smartphone....

After a rather recent public controversy over censorship rules, Facebook are revisiting their playbook when it comes to newsworthy images. Those posting images like the one at the top of this post by photography Nick Ut, were warned to remove or pixelate them to comply with Facebook’s guidelines. When even Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg reposted the photo to shot her support, her post was removed, too. The images and associated posts have since been reinstated....

Facebook is making some changes to the platform that will make all users really happy, but especially if they’re photographers. Soon, you will be able to protect your photos and control where they are shared on both Instagram and Facebook. If you want to have them taken down, you’ll also be able to file a takedown request. Rights Manager is nested under Facebook’s Creator Studio. According to Facebook, it uses image-matching technology “to help creators and publishers protect and manage their image content at scale....

A couple of months ago, we showed you some of Film Ferrania’s hardware. The equipment they’re using to bring back the company, as well as some much loved films. The plan then seemed to be starting fresh with E6 slide film. As it turns out, though, black & white has become the priority.
