For anybody who’s seen the legendary movie Top Gun, there’s one scene often sticks out in the mind. In it, a fictional MiG-28 is cruising through the air. Maverick (Tom Cruise) and Goose (Anthony Edwards) fly above it, inverted, in an F-14 Tomcat. Goose then proceeds to photograph the pilot of the MiG with a polaroid camera. Advertising photographer Blair Bunting wanted to try to recreate this. Firstly, to see if it was even possible, and also to see what the shot might have looked like....

Only a few short years ago, the idea of handheld photographs of the Milky Way would’ve been a thing of fantasy. Now, though, thanks to fast ultrawide glass and the super high ISO performance of today’s cameras, it’s a whole different story. This is proven by photographer Alyn Wallace. Okay, I think the selfie-craze has gone too far. The doctors at Clinical Center in Niš, Serbia have recently shocked the public with a set of selfies taken in the middle of a surgery. They proudly posted the photos on their Instagram accounts and caused a massive public outrage on social networks. In December 2017, the Clinical Center in Niš was moved to a new, larger and modernized building. According to Politika, some of the first surgeries were performed at the end of December....

After a pretty abysmal launch, the RED Hydrogen One had one possible saving grace that might help see it succeed and allow RED to redeem themselves in the eyes of their customers. Not to mention the entire smartphone-buying public. That one thing was its expandability. Modules that allow the user to enhance the functionality of the device. Now, RED seems to have silently scrapped those modules, including the camera module, after removing all traces of them from the Hydrogen One website....

With disappointing iPhone X sales, and the overall reduction in iPhone sales, it seems Foxconn are branching out. And they’re brancing out into the 8K prosumer video market, if Nikkei Asian Review’s report is accurate. They say that Foxconn are teaming up with cinema camera manufacturer RED to make professional quality and affordable cameras available for the general public. Given that RED’s current 8K Weapon systems cost somewhere in the region of $50K once you buy all the associated bits, that’s one heck of a goal....

According to a recent report, Samsung Electronics is planning to increase its production capacity of image sensors. The company has set out to become number one business in image sensor market. And in this race, they reportedly plan to beat Sony and take the throne. As ETnews reports, several Samsung’s plants will be converted from making DRAM memory into making image sensors. The same source reports that, after the conversion processes are over, Samsung will be producing 120,000 sensor units a month....

Replying to email is one of those daily chores that never seems to end. If you’re a retail photographer (weddings, portraits, events, boudoir), you can probably guess what an email from a potential new client is going to say before you even open it: What are your rates? How many photos do you take? Can I have the RAW files…? etc. So why not save your sanity and automate your initial email response?...

Everybody wants to know what Sigma plans for the future. Ever since they launched the ART line, the company has been getting nothing but praise. While there is a huge focus on Sigma’s lenses, the company’s camera line does not “suffer” from the same success. The world’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera (no caveats required) is now… space’s smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera? Sigma UK teamed up with Sent Into Space to send a pair of Sigma fp cameras (each attached to a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art) into the upper atmosphere – one shooting stills and the other shooting video – to capture the view from around 100,000 feet. The video begins with the launch of two balloons, each setting off at a slightly different time....

Recently, rumours broke that Panasonic was considering an APS-C L mount camera. At the time it was also reported that Sigma apparently isn’t happy with the progress of L mount, urging Panasonic to focus more on the system. Jokingly, I suggested that Sigma should listen to their own advice and give us that full-frame Foveon we’ve been promised for two years. Well, in a recently published interview with Dave Etchells at Imaging Resource, Sigma said they have no idea when they’ll actually be able to release a full-frame Foveon....

Picture this: you come home after a great day out photographing and you’re excited to look through all the beautiful images you’ve captured. However, after importing them you realize that they’re all garbage because they’re blurry. I’m sure you’ve experienced that, as have the majority of us. Personally, I’ve had to throw away several promising images due to them not being sharp. In a perfect world, you’d come home after every session with 100% of the images being tack sharp but unfortunately, that’s rarely the case....

Well, it was a matter of time. After announcing that you’ll be able to use the ZV-1 as a webcam, Sony has now officially launched the software. And even better, they expanded it to 34 other camera models. The Imaging Edge software is now out, and it lets you turn your Sony camera into a fancy USB webcam. Sony has posted a teaser to YouTube for a new product being announced on Wednesday, September 28th at 10am Eastern (3pm UK time). Sony hasn’t specifically said what’s coming, except for the fact that it’s a new camera and that it’s part of the cinema line. Right now, though, all rumours seem to point towards it being the Sony FX30. There hasn’t been a massive amount of leaks on the FX30 yet, and nothing has really been confirmed, although it’s expected to essentially be an FX3 with the same body and almost exactly the same specifications, including 4K 120fps, but with a smaller 26-megapixel sensor....
