Sony has today announced their new flagship mirrorless camera, the Sony A9 II. The rumours of a 36-megapixel sensor were wrong, although it still looks like a nice upgrade over the original Sony A9. While some of the specs look quite similar, Sony says many features have been upgraded to “meet the needs fo professionals”. First, let’s get the general specs out of the way… Looking at the specs, it doesn’t seem like all that much has changed since the A9, except for the second card slot going UHS-II, but it has had quite a few improvements....

While some companies are trying to make the sensors in their cameras bigger, Sony are doing the opposite. They’re going smaller. Really small. Their new 2mm sensor is capable of a single megapixel, 1,296 pixels along the longest edge. Paired with a 2.6mm lens, the circuit that connects the whole thing to a device is also extremely tiny. The 20 pin connector is shrunk down to a minuscule 3.3mm. And the whole setup weighs just a tenth of a gram....

Filmmaker, gimbal ninja and YouTuber Brandon Li has been playing around with Sony’s new software for the A7S III mirrorless camera and the ZV-1 vlogging camera to see if can actually let us do away with gimbals for shooting video. The cameras have an accelerometer inside them that allows the camera to record the orientation data of the camera while shooting video. The software on the desktop then reverses these movements in post....

It turns out that both of the A5 and A6 naming options for Sony’s upcoming small form factor full-frame mirrorless camera were wrong. Sony Alpha Rumors is reporting that it’s actually going to be called the Sony A7C. It will have a body largely inspired by the Sony A6600 but with a larger grip to accommodate the NP-FZ100 battery. SAR says that “two solid source[s]” confirmed that the new entry-level camera would indeed be called the Sony A7C and not the A5 or A6 as originally rumoured....

Bank Top is a collaboration with writer and academic Abdul Aziz Hafiz, examining the representation and misrepresentation of communities in northern England, focusing on the neighborhood of Bank Top in Blackburn. Open Photographer of the Year for 2021 is Tamary Kudita from Zimbabwe. Her photo African Victorian was the winner in the Creative category, and it shows a young black woman dressed in a Victorian dress and holding traditional Shona cooking utensils....

Development of the OM System M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm f3.5 Macro ISO Pro (wow, what a mouthful!) was announced back in September 2022 in a road map update. The spot was actually allocated a year earlier, in September 2021, in a previous road map update. Until very recently, though, there was no real news on when we might hear an announcement. Then, a couple of weeks ago, that changed. OM System released a firmware update on January 20th for the E-M1 Mark II, E-M1 Mark III, E-M5 Mark III, E-M1X and OM-5 cameras....

The Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art has been a staple among the gear collections of many photographers since its release back in 2014. It’s no accident, either. It’s an excellent lens offering fantastic results. But today, it has one big flaw. It’s designed for DSLRs and not mirrorless cameras. Sure, you can use adapters, and there is an E-Mount version, but it’s still just basically the DSLR lens with an adapter bolted onto the end....

Steadicam, the devices famous for stabilising Hollywood’s footage for decades, are refocusing their efforts towards phones. Tiffen, Steadicam’s owners, have just announced the Steadicam Volt. Taking square aim at the influx of motorised handheld gimbals launched recently, the Volt works a little differently. It also offers advantages over those motorised gimbals we’ve come to know. It’s also been awarded as an Honoree of the 2017 CES Innovation Awards. Tiffen have released smartphone stabilisers before....

Last week, street photographer Joshua Rosenthal visited the Ventura County Fair in Ventura, California. Since he is, well, a street photographer, he used the opportunity to take some candid portraits of people at the fair. When he woke up the following day, he saw something extremely unsettling: photos of him were shared across Facebook, along with vicious and disturbing accusations from local vigilantes. Joshua shared the Facebook post he found....

It can be gnarly out there, especially if you’re a pro-surf photographer. This week a boat full of professional photographers, cameramen and pro surfers got more than they bargained for when they got hit by a true monster of a wave in Teahupoo, Tahiti. The video above shows the camera boat first being it by a wave which it rides with relative ease, but then a massive wave sneaks in from the opposite direction, seemingly out of nowhere, sending the boat into an almost verticle position....

Tamron has just announced 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Sony E-mount APS-C cameras. The lens gives you a 25.5-105mm equivalent focal length range, which makes it pretty versatile. While the new lens will be ready for orders in January, Tamron has already released the specs and the pricing, so let’s what you can expect. The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD is built from 16 elements in 12 groups, with two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements and one hybrid aspherical lens element....

Who says you have to choose between film and digital? Certainly not Michael Shainblum who takes us behind the scenes in this beautiful video while he captures telephoto images of landscapes in golden hour fog. Now you might be thinking that a 100-400mm lens wouldn’t be the first thing you’d reach for in your camera bag when shooting the last light of day. But after watching this I’m thinking that perhaps I should use my long lenses more when I’m shooting landscapes....

I knew we’d see a smaller interchangeable lens Raspberry Pi-powered camera than the Paparazzo at some point. This one’s a little different, though. Instead of walking around and shooting pictures like a regular camera, this one requires a little external tech to access it. The new 2016 MacBook Pro has been getting a lot of flak. They’ve removed all ports except USB Type-C and the headphone jack (sorry, what?), you can’t upgrade the RAM, and the highest capacity model is a mere 16GB. I know many photographers who’ve already switched to Surface Pro tablets. A few have held onto their 2015 MacBook Pro and built a desktop Windows machine for more powerful stuff. Some have gone with the new MacBook Pro anyway....

A team at Harvard University have build a lens that’s thinner than the waves of light it focuses. Based on light-warping metamaterials, this lens may one day replace the heavier glass lenses found in items like microscopes, smartphones, cameras and even telescopes. Lens technology has come a very long way since those early days, but it’s still difficult to build very compact lenses. If you’ve ever wondered why your phone’s camera lens sticks slightly proud of the back, this is why....

I might get ratty when it comes to arbitrary rulings on whether or not a type of camera makes someone ‘professional’, but if the decision is ‘No photography’ then so be it. Institutions prohibit photography for a variety of reasons—from protecting their artefacts from light exposure to protecting copyright—but taking it up with the security guard won’t get you anywhere....
