After Olympus and Ricoh, it’s Nikon’s turn to introduce their latest rugged compact camera. Other than being resistant to water, shock, low temperatures, dust, and sand, it also features 4K UHD videos. So, if you’re a loyal Nikon shooter looking for a tough camera, have a look. The Nikon Coolpix W300 is equipped with a 5x optical zoom NIKKOR lens covering the range from 24 mm to telephoto 120 mm (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm) and offers a maximum aperture of f/2....

Nikon’s D7x00 line of DSLRs was last updated only two years ago in March 2015 with the release of the D7200. Now, though, it looks like they’re getting ready to replace it sooner than anybody expected. Perhaps it’s the demand for 4K in a body that costs less than the D500. Maybe it’s some other reason. But whatever it is, Nokishita say it’s being announced “soon (probably next week)”. It’s been suggested by Nikon Rumors that the announcement will be made on April 11th or 12th....

Nikon’s been long criticised for not having any decent kind of wireless control system since they switched from the optical CLS/AWL to the new radio system with the Nikon SB-5000 speedlight in 2016. With the optical system, Nikon shooters had the relatively inexpensive SU-800. Radio wireless hasn’t really had any option besides buying a spare SB-5000 to sit on your hotshoe as a commander. Well now, that’s changed as Nikon announces their new and weird WR-R11a and WR-R11b pair of radio triggers along with a WR-T10 remote controller....

It probably won’t come as much of a surprise that Nokia have pulled the plug on their $25,000 Ozo VR camera. At least, not as much as it has come to the up to 310 Nokia employees (30% of their workforce) that are about to be laid off. Nokia blame the “slower-than-expected development of the VR market”, apparently. Basically, we aren’t buying VR gear fast enough. So, it’s all our fault....

As seems to be the trend, Panasonic has jumped on the bandwagon of letting you use your mirrorless camera as a webcam over USB. Sort of. Whereas most manufacturers like Canon, Sigma and Fuji let your computer detect your camera as an actual USB webcam device, Panasonic’s solution… Well, it works, but it’s pretty clunky. Instead of simply showing up as a capture device, like the others, Panasonic’s solution basically sends a live view stream to their desktop app (for Windows only)....

Now, steady yourself, this might come as a bit of a shock. Olympus have now officially killed the Four Thirds camera system. Ok, so perhaps it’s not really that much of a surprise. It’s more than six years since the last new Four Thirds camera, so we all knew it was probably coming. DPReview reports that the news comes as four-thirds.org releases its latest lens catalogue. The system was initially developed by Olympus along with Kodak, as a new lens format for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras and introduced in 2003....

Unfortunately, it’s very common that photos published online get stolen and used without permission. But a recent report by Copytrack shows just how common it is. According to this report, more than 2.5 billion images are stolen worldwide every day. Copytrack has recently published its 2019 version of the Global Infringement Report. It used data collected over the course of one year, from December 2017 to December 2018. According to two studies from IMGembed and Copytrack, there are around 3 billion images shared on the internet every day....

Pentax has today officially announced the development of the new HD PENTAX-D FA★85mm F1.4 ED SDM AW K mount lens for Pentax. At the moment, this is just a development announcement, but some of the lens specs have been released, along with a single photo. And this one doesn’t appear to simply be a rebranded Tokina. About the new lens, Pentax says… When it comes to the specs, Pentax is being surprisingly forthcoming, although they do stress that the designs and specifications are subject to change without notice....

And sometimes, it may happen that people you accidentally photograph share a very special moment while you’re pressing the shutter. This happened to Col Stinson, who photographed an engagement of a couple he doesn’t know. Now he’s using Twitter hoping to find the happy couple, so he can share the photo with them....

On 31 May, Gorillaz published a video for their song “Humility.” But photographer Jairo Melara discovered something in it. After watching the video, he realized that it contains a look and feel that is very similar to his photo shoot from two years earlier. A bit too similar. Melara shoot for a Los Angeles-based company Fifth District. Back in 2016, he did a photo shoot at Venice Beach, with a model wearing roller skates, white stockings, green shorts and a white top....

Many photographers argue that Unsplash is a disaster for the industry. But it seems that it can also be harmful to those who download and use photos from the website. Photographer, cameraman, and presenter Simon Palmer recently got into legal trouble after using a photo from Unsplash on his blog. Although the photo was from the “source of freely usable images,” Palmer got a copyright infringement notice from Copytrack requesting him to pay a license fee....

On January 13, 2012, Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia hit an underwater rock. The ship wrecked, taking 32 lives away. The disaster attracted a huge attention of the public, and one photographer was among them. Two years after the disaster, Jonathan Danko Kielkowski managed to sneak inside Costa Concordia just before it got scraped. He brought his camera and small tripod with him and brought back the images of the ghost ship – one of the largest ones ever to be abandoned....

One thing that seems to have become quite popular over the last year or two is colourising black and white photos. We’ve seen lots of people manually colouring old black and whites to help provide more context and tangibility to historical images and we’ve also seen AI neural engines that claim to do it automatically to produce realistic results. After 33 years, Polaroid Spectra film is about to be discontinued. Polaroid Originals has just announced that it will no longer produce it, and if you want to stock up, the final batch is now on sale. After the last batch is sold out, you will no longer be able to buy Spectra film, neither color nor black and white. Spectra cameras have been around since 1986, and according to Polaroid Originals CEO Oskar Smolokowski, they’re now coming to the end of their useful lives....
