The words “RED” and “patent” are pretty familiar bedfellows. They’ve used their raw video patents to strongarm every other camera manufacturer from being able to implement raw video in their camera without RED’s approval (and a hefty fee), even if those companies have developed their own raw video technologies. Now, they’ve filed – and been granted – a new patent over compressed raw video. The new US patent number 11,503,294, joints three other RED patents relating to compressed raw video (8,872,933, 9,479,749 and 9,787,878), but this new one seems to encompass devices other than just cinema cameras....

RED seems to have been fraught with controversy pretty much since they first launched way back in 2005. The big issue at the moment – and for most of the last few years – has been their patents covering raw video. It’s a long drawn out topic that’s currently being fought out between RED and Nikon after Nikon’s inclusion of N-RAW in the Nikon Z9. Nikon’s disputing it, seemingly arguing that RED shouldn’t have been granted in the first place....

Samsung has announced today the world’s first 64-megapixel sensor for smartphone cameras. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 expands Samsung’s 0.8μm image sensor lineup from existing 20Mp to ultra-high 64Mp resolutions. Along with the ISOCELL Bright GW1, Samsung has launched another variant, the 48MP ISOCELL Bright GM2. The GW1 can produce 16Mp images in low-light conditions, while in bright light you can get highly detailed 64Mp shots. It also supports real-time HDR of up to 100-decibels (dB) that should provide richer hues than those you get with conventional sensors....

If you think your job’s a bit poopy, spare a thought for these scientists studying satellite images of penguin excrement. Fortunately, the images actually led to the discovery of a previously unknown colony of Emperor penguins in the Antarctic. The images were taken from the European Commission’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellite mission and also the Maxar WorldView-3 satellite. Scientists then confirmed that there was indeed a new group of the flightless birds....

Famous stock photo platform Shutterstock has announced the acquisition of PicMonkey, a web-based image editing and design platform. PicMonkey should be able to offer more content to image editors and illustrators, and Shutterstock expects to increase annual revenues after acquiring PicMonkey for $100 million dollars. PicMonkey was founded in 2012. It’s a web-based editor that lets you access thousands of templates, graphics, and fonts for your designs. Sigma recently made a big leap into the world of the cinema by announcing 8 new cine lenses all at once. While most are expected to be released throughout the course of 2017, pricing and availability for the first two has now been announced. Those two lenses are the 18-35mm T2.0 and 50-100mm T2.0 lenses for APS-C sensor cameras. Sigma has announced the new 1.7.0 update of the Sigma Optimization Pro software. This software allows you to connect your computer to your Sigma lenses via the use of the mount-appropriate adapter for the system you use. Sony has announced today a new zoom lens for their APS-C cameras. Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is a lightweight, versatile lens, and an “ideal fit” for Sony cameras like a6500, a6300 and a6000. It features optical stabilization and a linear autofocus motor, which should provide you with sharper images with handheld shooting. Sony’s new 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 lens provides 27-202.5mm equivalent focal length. Just like most lenses of this kind, you should find it useful for different kinds of shooting situations....
