In my last post, I shot images with both the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 to compare the ISO performance of both cameras. As always, this led to a lot of comments, emails, and DMs asking me if I could also compare the different file formats of these cameras. While I still have both these cameras on loan from Canon, I decided that now would be a good time to tests these parameters for all of you (and me too)....
Growing crystals fascinated me as a kid. I remember my parents buying me an Introduction to Chemistry experiment kit – which actually contained a “flexidisc” (a flexible album, basically) of Johnny Ball narrating and guiding you through the experiments. There were a bunch of different crystal growing experiments contained within that I just had to try. In fact, they might actually have been the only experiments in the kit that I did try....
Along with camera profiling, monitor calibration is one of the most vital things a photographer can do to ensure their work looks the way they intend it to look throughout the whole imaging process. There are various devices out there for calibrating monitors, and now a new one has been added into the mix. Yesterday, Datacolor announced the new SpyderX Pro and SpyderX Elite, adding to their lineup of monitor calibration tools....
With the consumer and commercial video drone markets pretty much sewn up, DJI is turning its attention towards drone racing, with the new DJI Digital First Person Viewing (FPV) Transmission System. The system includes goggles, an FPV Air Unit Transmission Module, an FPV remote controller and an FPV camera. Together, DJI says, the system offers smooth, clear HD video, with ultra-low latency and long-range transmission. The FPV camera can also record 1080p video at 60fps, or 720p at 120fps, while the goggles can record 720p at 60fps for instant playback....
Adobe Lightroom seems to get more and more useful every year. The most recent updates have made this a formidable piece of software. It used to be that I did a few small global adjustments in Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw and then headed straight for Photoshop to do the majority of the retouching work. These days, I feel that there is less demand for perfection in terms of skin and more demand for a realistic look....
This is one of those posts that’s going to divide people. Some will love it and completely agree with everything said. Well, we were all waiting for the other shoe to drop on the Canon EOS R5. 8K RAW video for under $4,000? There had to be a catch, right? Well, it looks like, yeah, there probably is. According to Canon’s documentation for the EOS R5, it’s potentially going to suffer from some pretty drastic overheating issues, even when shooting 4K. In this video, Max Yuryev goes over the video recording specs in the Canon documentation and calls out Canon and EOS R5 reviewers for not bringing this to more peoples attention during all the announcements and talk yesterday about the new camera....
This is a pretty cool development from LibRaw (the company behind FastRawViewer) which lets you squeeze an extra stop of dynamic range out of your Canon 5D Mark IV raw files. Essentially, it exploits a quirk of dual pixel raw files. As they explain, a dual pixel raw file is essentially two exposures in one, a stop apart. Their new app, DPRSplit uses these two exposures to form a new DNG raw file containing the dynamic range of both exposures....
Russian influencer Ekaterina Didenko recently threw a party that went incredibly wrong. During the party, her husband reportedly poured 55 lb of dry ice into a swimming pool for “visual effects.” This caused him and two other guests to die from carbon dioxide poisoning, and what started as celebration ended in a terrible disaster. Ekaterina was celebrating her 29th birthday at a sauna complex. You can see in the video above that dry ice was poured into a swimming pool, producing the recognizable thick vapor....

A photographer has accused model and actor Emily Ratajkowski of using an image of herself on social media without permission, according to a copyright infringement lawsuit. The model apparently posted the images to her Instagram account in 2019. The photographs of Emily were taken by photographer Edward Opinaldo and show her walking out of a building in New York City wearing a pink trouser suit. The images have since been removed from her account....

Up front let me say “field curvature” is not that pesky problem where images with straight lines in the frame seem to bow in or out as you move towards of the corners, that would be distortion, which comes in two core flavours, barrel and pincushion, with moustache as a somewhat recalcitrant but rare third option. There is a relationship between distortion and field curvature, but we won’t be getting into that in this article....
When you’re trying to sell your used gadgets online, you can increase your chances by adding some good photos and videos of them. But if those gadgets are broken, you’ll really need to go an extra mile to find the buyer. Berlin-based filmmaker Simon Meyer took that extra step. 43Rumors has posted some newly leaked photos of the upcoming Olympus PEN E-P7 Micro Four Thirds mirrorless camera. It’s expected to be the first camera from Olympus since its takeover by OM Digital Solutions was completed at the beginning of this year. OM Digital did say in a recent interview that a new camera would be available “in the next few weeks” and given that images are now leaking, it looks like it’s going to be the PEN E-P7, and it’ll still bear the Olympus branding....
If you’re a recent DJI Phantom 4 owner that was upset by the price drop after the announcement of the Mavic Pro, then you’re going to love this one. British drone retailer Drones Direct are offering a 24 carat gold plated DJI Phantom 4 for sale. This too, has had its price reduced, dropping from £21,999 (around $27k) to a more reasonable £19,999 (about $24.5k). It offers all the same features as the original Phantom 4, but with bling....
At least, it will in New Jersey. The State legislators have just approved a ban on operating drones while intoxicated. When signed into law, the bill will punish pilots who are drunk or otherwise inebriated with up to six months in prison or a $1,000 fine. The vote went through 39-0 in the State Senate and 65-0 in the State Assembly. It’s not clear exactly when the bill will go into law, but as drone usage rises daily, it sends a pretty clear message....

Understanding colors is one of the key concepts in photography. Personally, I’ve always found it interesting to learn about colors, and it has helped me immensely in each of my creative endeavors. In this video, Kebs Cayabyab gives you six principles to follow while taking photos. Master them, and your colors will always be spot-on. 1.Less is more: put simply, fewer colors are easier to manage. If you only have one or two main colors in the image, it will be easier to use them to make your subject stand out....
