It’s been an interesting journey for Light, the company that brought us that crazy 16-lens camera five years ago. It garnered a lot of hype when it was first announced, and once word got out that the company had secured $30mil in funding and the Light L16 camera was going to see a big storage increase, a lot of people got excited. It wasn’t until 2017 that they actually started shipping, but the reception was somewhat cold....
Sad news comes from Italy. Lino Manfrotto passed away on Sunday, February 5th at the age of 80. He used to be an Italian photojournalist, but we all know him as the founder of Manfrotto, the leading brand of camera and lighting support gear. Lino Manfrotto worked as a photojournalist for a local press company in Vincenza. He noticed at the time that camera support and telescopic rods were very rare in the market....
When it comes to telescopes, gear matters, and so does size. the bigger is better, and NASA could make telescopes up to 100 times bigger than before. Yep, you read that correctly. The secret lies in liquid lenses, and the very first experiment is about to take place aboard the International Space Station. I personally got familiar with liquid lenses back in 2020 when Huawei patented one for its phone cameras....
Lomography has introduced a new instant camera with wide angle lens named Lomo’Instant Automat Glass Magellan. Aside from a multi-coated 38mm lens, the first of its kind, it also features aperture that’s pretty large for an instant camera. It goes up to f/4.5, which makes the lens ideal for action shots and shooting in low light conditions. Skylum has released the latest update for Luminar AI, its AI-based editing software. The biggest change you’ll see is a whole new feature – Portrait Bokeh AI. As the name suggests, it adds artificial bokeh to your portrait shots in a couple of clicks. But other than that, Skylum has added a few more improvements to the software in an attempt to make it a bit less automated and give you more control over your edits....
Just when we thought softboxes had been designed and redesigned to death, MagMod comes along to set the record straight. Today the company has introduced the world to their new “revolutionary” MagBox magnetic softbox. Designed primarily for speedlights, it actually looks pretty cool – and quite different to softboxes we’ve seen before. The product is being funded through Kickstarter where they’ve already annihilated their $100,000 goal in just a couple of hours....
Magnum Photos has joined the NFT craze and announced its very first collection. The renowned photoagency celebrates its 75th anniversary this year, and the collection is a part of the celebration. As you can imagine, it contains plenty of incredible photos from Magnum’s archive. And that’s not all – it’s only the first out of three NFT collections planned to be released this year. The first collection, Magnum 75, was first revealed on Foundation on Tuesday, 28 June....
If we make photographs with a long exposure and our composition includes movement, (of either our subject or our camera,) we are recording an image our eyes will never see naturally. The duration of time our shutter is open will typically result in a blurred photo. Shortly after buying my first camera, a wonderful old Nikkormat FTN with a 50mm f1.4 lens, back in the early 1980’s, I enrolled in a photography night class at the local high school....
Meyer Optik Görlitz has just released Trioplan 35mm f/2.8 II. The new lens features a recognizable look and bokeh of other company’s lenses, and you can get one in pretty much any mount you want: 11 of them, to be exact. With its 35mm focal length, the Meyer Optik Görlitz Trioplan 35mm f/2.8 II is aimed particularly at street and documentary photographers. However, this focal length can also work beautifully for landscapes, cityscapes, even portraits, so I’d say it’s a rather versatile lens....
Usually, it’s female bodies that cause the Photoshop controversy. This time, not so much. It seems that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has had a little Photoshop treatment for the Shot Caller movie posters, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. It looks suspiciously like the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s body from the four year old Snitch movie poster. It was spotted by Scott Wampler of Birth.Movies.Death. It’s not surprising that many others had noticed it, as Snitch wasn’t met with the best of receptions....

Often I think about what I’ve achieved, and what goals I’ve attained, or missed. But this year I decided to take a slightly different tack and looked back at the images I shot instead. Leica has announced a new version of their Monochrom (Type 246) camera. Perhaps inspired by a famous Rollingstones’ song, this limited edition camera is painted almost entirely in black. The only white details are the markings, and they glow green in the dark. The overall look of the camera is absolutely beautiful, but there’s only one flaw: it costs $15,750, twice as much as the “regular” Leica M Monochrom....
While announcement date rumours aren’t always that reliable, the spec sheets often are, especially as we get closer to (or past) those expected announcement dates. Sony Rumors just posted a new list of specs along with some photos they discovered through Weibo for the new Sony A7000, which will be announced either during CES next week, or later in January 2019. Update: Sony Alpha Rumors is disputing this rumour as “fake”....
What’s your favourite lens? That’s a tough question, and obviously, it depends on several factors. What you’re shooting, what you have available, and how large your bank balance is. But there is one lens in particular that is usually recommended for landscape photography: the ultra-wide angle. Other than the D6, Nikon also has something to make Z shooters happy today: the company has just announced NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR and NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S. Shooting with only available light can be quite a challenge sometimes. The same goes for shooting in small spaces, as well as shooting in ugly locations. But what happens when all three conditions meet? Can you imagine taking professional-looking fashion photos in a tiny, ugly backyard shed with nothing but available light? Audi was recently accused of running an “insensitive” campaign for the Audi RS4 Avant. The German car manufacturer shared a photo of a girl leaning against the car grille eating a banana. However, it has caused a strong backlash. People were so offended that Audi was forced to take the photo down and issue a public apology. Audi first tweeted the photo with a caption “Lets your heart beat faster – in every aspect....
Despite 54% of all photos uploaded to Flickr being shot with iPhones, those at the top of the pile seem to be shot by DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. Flickr has determined its users’ top 25 photos of 2017, based on various metrics. Number of views, shares, and favourites created a shortlist which was then checked and judged by real-life humans. The top spot goes to Say Goodbye, by Iwona Podlasinska, created with a Sony A7RII and Sony Sonnar T* 135mm f/1....
Camera equipment is an ever-increasing target for thieves, and unlike mobile phones and other electronic equipment, it doesn’t usually come with tracking or disabling devices installed. But tracking options do exist, we just need to add them to our gear. One photographer in Australia was incredibly fortunate to be able to recover around $7,000 worth of camera equipment after putting Apple AirTags on a few of the higher value items....
