Here S How Fuji Engineers Shrunk Down The Ibis System For The New X S10

One of the most useful features to be added to digital cameras in the last few years is in-body image stabilisation, or “IBIS”. Some companies have implemented extremely good implementations over the years while others have only jumped into the IBIS game recently and are still playing catch up. But regardless of which category they fall into, all companies are actively working to improve it. We recently got a behind the scenes look at the Olympus IBIS system and how it’s grown over the years, and now Fuji has also posted a video going over the evolution of its IBIS system, to coincide with the release of the recently announced new Fuji X-S10 – which has a scaled-down, but very impressive looking IBIS system offering up to six stops of stabilisation....

Here S How To Non Destructively Convert A 65 Year Old 8Mm Movie Camera To Digital

Converting old film cameras, particularly movie cameras, to digital has become a lot more viable over the last few years as devices like the Raspberry Pi and small form factor cameras to go with them have become more prevalent – even if there’s still a massive shortage going on right now. We’ve seen projects pop up lately showing some very cool conversion projects but this one dates all the way back to 1957....

Here S How To Use The Crop Tool To Zoom

I want to talk today about one tool, in Lightroom and Photoshop, that is probably used on nearly every image but is not used to it’s full potential – the Crop tool. Now, I, like most of us I would imagine, use the crop tool to make minor adjustments to the image – maybe crop out an unwanted tree or post and straighten up the image. But what if I told you that you can dramatically change the look and feel of your image and even use it to zoom?...

How Collaborating On A Photo Exhibition Rekindled My Passion For Photography

I told you before about Christopher Larson and his series of collaborative virtual exhibitions. I recently became a part of it, collaborating with Chris on a set of photos for April 2021. I’d taken a long break from photography before that, and it was tough to start. But once I did – I couldn’t stop. The whole experience was beneficial for me, both as a photographer and as a social human being....

How Does The 10 Year Old Canon 5D Mark Iii Compare With A Modern Fuji Gfx 100S Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

The Canon 5D Mark III marks its 10th birthday this year. It doesn’t feel like it’s been anywhere near that long to me. Of course, the last couple of years have all kinda blurred into a single long month for most of us. But nope, 10 years old it is this month, having been released in March 2012. But how does this ancient DSLR stand up to today’s technology? Well, photographer Zach Sutton at LensRentals decided to find out and see how it compared to a modern medium format mirrorless camera....

How Forced Perspective Works And The Maths Behind It

Forced perspective is one of the most wonderfully creative tools photography affords. It allows us to create optical illusions that either baffle or simply amuse us. Or we can change the scale of items seamlessly with ease. We’ve seen it in popular movies and TV shows like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. We probably see it far more often than we realise. But there’s often a lot of maths and science that goes into creating forced perspective, as you can see in the LoTR clip linked above....

How I Photographed A Kawasaki Zx 12R With Light Painting And Compositing

It’s always fun having the opportunity to create new images, especially when the subject is something new. It comes with its own unique challenges. Like this lovely Kawasaki motorbike that we took to a little carpark near the town of Kilsyth in Scotland overlooking the countryside and surrounding towns. I then grabbed my trusty Sigma sdQ-H with 50-100 f1.8 Art lens. The fast aperture and long focal length gives a nice subject isolation and scene compression while the little Manfrotto Pixi lets us keep the camera low to the ground....

How I Prevented A Godox Speedlight From Setting My Studio On Fire

Yup, is a harsh title, clickbaity even. Sadly, it’s true. I do think that this story (and lesson) could have ended up very differently. Luckily, no one is hurt and no harm as done to my studio aside one dead battery. I am a big Godox fan. I shoot quite a bit with the AD600, AD200 and the V860II for Sony. Well, mostly with the AD600 and AD200. The 860II is many times waiting in the drawer for when we need an extra light....

How I Wasted 10 000 Plus What I Learned And How It Applies To Business

You can’t learn anything in life unless you make mistakes. Some mistakes are obvious. Some mistakes are a lot more subtle. In this article I will share a subtle mistake that cost me over ten grand (plus a few other ongoing mistakes that are costing me money right now) and what lessons can be learned and applied to running a photography business. How I Wasted $10000 This is not a business mistake, it’s just a dumb-a$$ everyday mistake – but this is a category of mistake that definitely applies to how you run your business....

How Photograph Flowers Splashing In Milk With An Infrared Laser

My Students came up with an idea to drop flowers into a pan of milk after they saw several pictures on Instagram. The students decided to create a technique for getting the perfect picture by eliminating all trial and error. The students created the following technique and were able to photograph over 70 photos, successfully capturing the splash every time. To capture the splashing flowers, the camera was set to bulb mode in a dark room and the timing was controlled by an Arduino microprocessor....

How To Become A Wedding Photographer

I get emails on a monthly basis asking for advice on where to get started with wedding photography, can I give someone any advice on getting started, can they tag along to a wedding to learn or come and second shoot for me. As flattering as it is to be asked for this advice, and as much as I’d love to be able to give people advice tailored to where they currently are in their journey, I simply don’t have the time to do this....

How To Colour Correct Your Footage Without Having To Resort To Luts

I’ve been using the ColorChecker Video and ColorChecker Passport Video since around the time they were first released a little over four years ago and you can read my review here. But when it comes to inserting them into your workflow, they can be a little confusing for people who’ve never used them before. In this video, Gerald Undone takes a 26-minute deep-dive into how to colour correct your footage and grade log footage using the ColorChecker Video (and CCPV) in DaVinci Resolve....

How To Create This Epic Rainbow Eye Effect In Camera

When I was photographing eyes a few weeks ago I came across a fascinating phenomenon: The human iris and especially blue irises produce rainbow coloured gradients under cross polarization. I used the cross polarization technique to cancel out harsh reflections of the speedlight that I used to illuminate the eye, which I was photographing, when I discovered rainbow gradients in the blue eye of my sister. I had previousely noticed some rainbow coloured highlights in my own (brown) eyes, but not really quite enough to leave stumped and fascinated as when I looked at the image above on the back of my viewfinder....

How To Overcome Fear And To Create When You Re Just Not Feeling It

Making something something when you’re in a creative rut is one of photography’s biggest challenges. Not just photography, though, it applies equally to pretty much every creative outlet. We often hear of “writer’s block”, and this is essentially the same thing as it applies to other mediums. Clinton wrote earlier about how he deals with his own creative blocks. In this video from photographer Sean Tucker, we take a deeper look into the topic....

How To Stop Your Lenses From Fogging Up And Why You Need To

Lenses fogging up usually isn’t a big problem for me here in the UK. But it is a problem I’ve faced while shooting in warmer climates. You go from a nice cool air conditioned building to the hot and humid outdoors and there it goes. Within 10 seconds, your lens is virtually impossible to see through. If your lens is weather sealed, it’s just a waiting game for it to clear up....
