COVID-19 got everybody to create and upload content. If you are just using your webcam, you need nothing more. If you want to up the quality, you need a DSLR or a mirrorless camera to utilize the bigger sensors, better lenses and nicer overall look. Most “serious” cameras, though, can not operate as webcams and need a gizmo called a capture card. It’s a device that turns your camera’s HDMI output into a stream that a computer can take via its USB port....

Zhiyun just announced a smartphone gimbal that is cheaper than a cup of soup in some restaurants – the Smooth X. I am actually kinda surprised by the number of features you can cram into a gadget that costs so little. The biggest highlight of this gimbal is the fact that it folds down to pocket size. Ideally, that would make it easier to have the gimbal ready whenever you want it....

Sometimes, you’re sitting on social media, scrolling away and something stops you in your tracks and you just can’t help but sit and stare. That was the case for me with this Milky Way photograph from landscape and commercial photographer Mark Duffy. DIYP reached out to Mark to find out more about it and how it was created. It’s a bi-copter drone (2 arms, 2 propellers) which offers up to an amazing 50 minutes of flight time on a single battery charge. It’s a very unique design, inspired by the Boeing V-22 Osprey military aircraft. It’s compact, foldable, and they’re claiming it as the “world’s first” v-shaped drone with only 2 propellers....

I’ve been following Ivan Miranda’s channel on YouTube now for a few months. It’s not a photography or video channel, though. It’s about 3D printing. As the year has gone on, I’ve been getting more into 3D printing myself, and Ivan shows off some fantastic projects that he creates on his channel. So it’s been a great one to follow. When Google first announced Glass a few years ago, there was a lot of excitement. Once they finally hit the streets, however, that excitement was short-lived. The folks at Thingyfy have released some interesting pinhole lenses over the last few years. 2017 brought us the Pinhole Pro, the world’s first multi-aperture pinhole lens and then in 2019 we got the Pinhole Pro X, an 18-36mm variable focal length pinhole lens with a fixed aperture. Now, the company has combined the two to bring us the Pinhole Pro Max, which offers both variable 18-36mm aperture and six different apertures....

A One Shot Film, is a movie shot in one long take, by a single camera. Or, it’s cut in such a way as to give the impression that it was. There have only been twenty movies ever shot in a single long take. And another seven that have been edited to look as if they were. While not feature length, this 12 minute short film written and directed by Ruben Östlund is an ambitious project....

Creating a 3D model of someone’s face usually requires multiple shots taken from different angles. But researchers from the University of Nottingham and Kingston University have created an AI tool that makes it from a single portrait photo. The scientists describe the 3D face reconstruction as a “problem of extraordinary difficulty.” However, they’ve managed to use neural networks to turn any 2D portrait into a 3D model. There’s also a free online demo for you to try it yourself....

The Blackmagic Atem Mini (and Atem Mini Pro and Atem Mini Pro ISO) have quickly become very popular tools for multicam live streaming. They allow you to feed in up to four cameras and a separate dedicated audio stream with an easy ability to switch between them in real-time while offering a lot of features typically only found in much higher-end systems. But it can be a pain to keep setting up and tearing down if you’re not using it in a permanent location....
