One of the most frequently asked questions I get is how I shoot long-exposure photos from the cockpit and how they end up sharp, despite flying at roughly 950kmh / 500kts through the air. I will try to answer that question in more detail, going through the process and challenges step by step. Hopefully it sheds some light (pun intended) on the techniques I use and for the pilot-photographers among us some valuable and easy-to-use tips for your next night-flight....

Samsung’s 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP1 smartphone sensor has been creating quite a store since it was first rumoured back in January. For some, it’s got them very excited, while others have been quite critical without even having seen (let alone tried) a real working sensor inside a camera. But whatever your thoughts on it, it’s a pretty impressive feat. A new promotional video about the new sensor has been released by Samsung explaining in simple terms how some of its features work, like its “ChameleonCell” technology, Smart-ISO multi-sampling and how they all adjust themselves depending on what it is you’re shooting....

While the brands battle it out over who has the largest mount and whose lenses can have the widest apertures, Canon’s DSLRs have proven they have no problem with wide aperture f/1.2 lenses. And Samyang has been adding to that f/1.2 collective again, expanding their “XPERT” line of lenses with another new announcement. Starting off the XP series with a 24mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.2 lenses, they later added a 50mm f/1....

Satellite images have captured the moment that an iceberg five times the size of Malta broke away from the Brunt ice shelf in Antarctica. The iceberg had been monitored since 2012 after the first crack was discovered, and scientists have been predicting its calving for years since. The European Space Agency‘s (ESA) satellite Copernicus was able to provide detailed before and after images of the broken-off iceberg after working closely with glaciologists at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS)....

After certain weather-related events recently, some of you might be a bit fed up with the concept of snow. But this super-cute video should give a few warm fuzzies even to the most snow-jaded of you. This home security camera in Washington state managed to capture this adorable footage of a raccoon trying to catch snowflakes. Timothy Ellis had a floodlit security camera attached to his back porch. The footage shows his snow-covered yard in Everett, Washington....

It’s not uncommon that one artist gets inspired by another artist’s work. But sometimes it’s more of an imitation than inspiration, and pop star Selena Gomez has recently been accused of plagiarism. After launching her latest video for Back to You and a series of promo images on Instagram, many people accused her of blatantly copying the aesthetics of photographer Sarah Bahbah. People on social media first called out on Gomez for putting captions on photos and in the video, which is what Bahbah does in her work....

Sigma has now officially announced the five new “Global Vision” lenses (that’s the collective name for their Art, Sport & Contemporary lenses) that leaked last week. The new Z and RF mounts on the Nikon Z6/7 and Canon EOS R have been a big deal for a lot of people contemplating making the switch. This is especially true for owners of F or EF mount Sigma Art, Contemporary and Sport Series lenses. Sigma has now done some more testing and updated the compatibility lists for both cameras using the Nikon Z to F & Canon RF to EF lens mount adapters....

Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki has posted an update on the progress of their long-awaited full-frame Foveon camera, first announced during the initial L mount alliance announcement at Photokina in September 2018. It had an initial release date of 2019, which was then pushed back to 2020 in March 2019. In February 2020 it was announced that it was on hold indefinitely, but that they’re working on it. Later that same year, Sigma confirmed that they’re still working on it, but they still have no idea when it would be ready for prime time, which was then confirmed again in February 2021 with a “maybe 2022” release turning into “at least 2022”....

There seems to be many beginners in photography, who enthusiastically buy a mirrorless or DSLR-camera, use it intensively for two weeks, and then never touch it again. Yet some people manage to truly make photography into a passion from the very start, and they go on to enjoy it for years and years. I believe a core deciding factor for which of these you become, is how good your experience is during the first few weeks with the camera....

Skylum is no stranger to AI-powered imaging apps. Luminar and Aurora HDR both feature AI-enhanced effects to help make your post-processing life a little easier, and their Photolemur software is entirely AI-based. Now, Skylum is turning their attention towards drone photographs with a new desktop app for Windows and Mac called AirMagic. Snapchat Spectacles have finally stopped being a rare treasure. If you’ve wanted to try them out, you can now get them on the online store of Snap Inc. These sunglasses with a built-in camera allow you to shoot videos and record what you see from your point of view. These sunglasses were first announced in fall 2016, but it was fairly difficult to get them. You could only buy them at a special store in New York, or at some of the Snapbots: vending machines which appeared on various locations across the USA....

Well, there haven’t been all that many rumours about the apparently impending Sony A7 IV. We’ve figured it must be coming at some point relatively soon, given Sony’s typical release cycles and the fact that it was possibly a body Sony registered in April, but there hasn’t been a lot of information leaked about it at all. It seems, though, that an announcement had been planned for mid-September. Now, according to Sony Alpha Rumors, that announcement has been delayed until late October....

Well, this is a bit of a surprise statement from Terushi Shimizu, President and CEO of Sony Semiconductor Solutions during a recent briefing. According to an article on Nikkei Japan, he made the statement that smartphone image quality will exceed that of DSLRs “within the next few years”, although an image accompanying the presentation suggested a more specific timeframe with a 2024 date. If anybody would know about the image quality of sensors inside DSLRs and smartphones, it’s Sony....

Rolling shutter has been the bane of DSLR and mirrorless video shooters since the beginning. In fact, for users of just about any camera with a CMOS sensor. This is all down to how CMOS sensors traditionally work, scanning the scene line by line. Each line is captured at a slightly different point in time, so as you pan, it appears that subjects are leaning or wobbling. Hence it’s become affectionately known as the “jello effect”....

The folks at Sony Alpha Rumors say they’ve seen the Sony new APS-C camera and that they’ve been able to discern some solid details from it. Like, the fact that it’ll be a 24-megapixel sensor (and not the rumoured 32-megapixel sensor), and the general overall design of the system. From what they describe, it sounds a lot like the camera that the Canon EOS M50 should have been – You know an APS-C camera with flippy out LCD that shoots 4K video – but without a stupid crop in 4K mode, that they still have with the Mark II....
