NASA’s Curiosity rover has shared all kinds of photos with us, from remarkable discoveries to “tourist selfies.” But a recent photo it captured has made people’s imagination run wild. On 7 May, Curiosity took a photo of what appears to be a “doorway” carved into a Martian rock. It’s perfectly flat and rectangle-shaped, so it has sparked all sorts of conspiracy theories from the moment it was released. Curiosity rover snapped the photo with its Mastcam while it ascended Mount Sharp on sol 3466....

Many of us have experienced a memory card failure at some point, and although manufacturers have gotten much better at producing reliable cards, it still occasionally happens. Failure used to be fairly common in the early days of CompactFlash (when their capacity was still measured in MB) and in SD cards, but it’s rare that you hear about it in modern formats like XQD. GoPro are officially announcing their new Karma drone on September 19th, perhaps the Hero5, too. GoPro have kept both a very closely guarded secret for months. It looks like somebody at the GoPro website got a little eager, though. One can only assume that these are the Karma drone and Hero5 action camera....

Many camera bodies come equipped with image stabilisation (IBIS). Similarly, most high-end lenses also come with optical image stabilisation (IS). So what happens then if you use a body with IBIS coupled with an image-stabilising lens? Do you even need both or does one cancel the other out? And is it worth paying extra for the lenses with IS? For the first time dolphins were observed catching and eating live fish after a Go-Pro camera was attached to them during a scientific study. Researchers were able to not only capture video but also listen to the sounds the dolphins made while hunting. Colour wheels are fairly common to video editing applications. Lately, they seem to have started popping up in still image editing applications, too through the use of various plugins. We’ve seen plenty of awesome photos of the Martian surface thanks to Curiosity and Perseverance rovers. But ESA has recently shared an aerial shot that looks more like an abstract photo. It shows a white icy crate standing out against the red surface of Mars, and it’s truly gorgeous. The photo was taken by ESA/Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter on 5 July 2021. The crater you see in the photo is 4km wide, located in Mars’ north polar region of Vastitas Borealis....

You know we’re at peak levels of crazy when somebody shoves 16 8K RED Helium sensors into a single camera. But that’s exactly what Facebook and RED have done with the new Manifold 360 camera. Designed for “immersive cinematography”, the Manifold allows RAW video capture from all 16 cameras at 8K resolution and 60 frames per second each simultaneously. Oh yeah, it’s way out there. According to Facebook, the way it works… Well, let Facebook explain it themselves....

As one of the giants of the camera manufacturing world, Canon needs little introduction. But having a major bite of the pie doesn’t stop them from being innovative. What even is a ‘studio shooter’ today? Years ago it was a little easier to define, but due to us having tons of heavy, cumbersome lighting and cameras, we were all pretty grounded in the actual home-base of a studio. Today though, the vast majority of my own jobs are not shot in my own space. I shoot wherever I’m needed and whether that be in a home, an office, hair salon or even another hired studio, I’m always on the move....

There are certainly plenty of different camera straps in the market, and if you ask me, it’s hard to find the one that’s perfectly safe, yet comfortable enough to wear it all day. Fotodiox has announced their new EF-L Fusion Smart AF adapter for Canon EF lenses to let you mount them to most L mount bodies. It guarantees infinity focus, full electronic communication and seems to offer full autofocus, aperture control and image stabilisation (with compatible lenses). The EF-L Fusion Smart AF adapter is compatible with both full-frame EF lenses, as well as the APS-C EF-S lenses. Of course, you obviously won’t get full-frame coverage with crop lenses....

This is an odd one – but very cool. Fujifilm has spent the last few years systematically killing off all their film. Apparently, though, they’re considering starting up production of some black & white film stocks again. There might be a little lost in translation here, but the news was posted to Yahoo Japan (from ITMedia News). They say that Fujifilm is considering bringing back some of their discontinued films due to popular demand....
