Reckless drone flying in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve ended up with a catastrophe. A crash of two drones terrified elegant terns who were nesting nearby. As a consequence, they fled in terror leaving over 1,500 eggs behind. The aftermath of the drone crashes is seen in heartbreaking photos Bolsa Chica Conservancy shared on Twitter. Overhyped Camera Gear You Absolutely Shouldn T Buy Unless You Know Why You Need It

When I first watched this video, I thought “well, I’ve got like five of those things on his list and I find them quite useful”. And you’ll probably feel the same way. But you have to remember who this video from Raphael Ludwig is aimed towards. Mostly beginners. Every time a new piece of gear is announced, there’s a lot of hype and people new to photography and filmmaking get sucked in by it....

Panasonic Officially Announces The 60Fps Stills Capable Lumix G9 Mirrorless Camera

The Panasonic Lumix G9 is now official, and it’s a little beast. While Panasonic have become a favourite for video shooters, stills photographers tend to favour Olympus when it comes to Micro Four Thirds. It’s clear, though, that Panasonic have aimed the new G9 squarely at photographers, and demanding ones at that. The G9 shoots raw stills at up to an insane blackout-free 60 frames per second, and also offers an 80 megapixel “High Resolution” mode....

Passion Patience And Process How I Shot My Personal Project The Big Bow

I think one of the most important aspects of a successful photo is what happens before you ever click the shutter. Pre-visualization of what you want the photo to look like can happen quickly where you immediately envision the final photo, or it can develop over time where you build on your original concept, adding or subtracting elements, re-thinking your take on it before finally deciding on exactly what to shoot....

Personalizing My Bags With Killer Zippers

When one of my zipper pull broke, I thought, “well, that’s not a big deal. I will just add some paracord to replace it”. I like the saying from Mythbusters: “If it is worth doing, it is worth overdoing”, so just adding paracord was not an option. I wanted to personalize my pull and add my logo to it. I designed a little button in Fusion 360 that fits the paracord pull and has my logo in it....

Photographer Recreates A Pond To Photograph Wildlife During Different Seasons

Observing and photographing animals and insects is one of the most calming activities I can think of. For me, it’s a step to feeling more connected to nature and the world around me and understanding the local ecosystem better. And when plants and a bee hotel on my balcony help birds or bees, I feel extra happy. If you have enough space and time, and you’re willing to invest some effort, you can build a pond of your own and help an entire community of plants, animals, and insects....

Projecting Backgrounds Behind Your Subject With The Wemax Nova 4K Ust Aldp Laser Projector

Projectors have been a part of photography for a very long time. Originally, they were designed for boring your friends and family members with slides of your holiday snaps. Since then, though, projectors have become much more useful and now regularly play a creative or practical role in our photography and filmmaking needs. We’ve shown how you might be able to incorporate projectors into your workflow before, using one as a full-screen preview monitor for video editing....

Projection Tricks To Make The Most Out Of A Small Studio

The Light Blaster has become one of my favourite lighting tools over the last few months. I first got to play with one in person at The Photography Show in March. Some of you might remember the cartoon portrait tutorial by Dracorubio posted here shortly afterwards. The image shown in that tutorial was shot at the show, with a Light Blaster projecting onto the backdrop behind me. Now, Joe Edelman has gotten his hands on one, and put a video together on some of the different ways it can be used....

Push Developing Kodak Iso400 Film To Iso6400 At Home

Today I’m developing a roll of Kodak Tri-X 400 shot at 6400 ISO. I’ve been wanting to try this little experience for a while now. Some films are known for handling push processing very well and Kodak TX400 is one of them. Lots of photographers I know are even shooting by default at 1600 ISO but I wanted to push its limits 2 stops further. For this little experimentation, I was accompanied by my trusted Leica M6 and a recently acquired Voigtlander 35mm Nokton f1....

Reality Check Comparing The Sony A1 Vs A7S Iii Vs A9 Ii

So, Sony has announced a new camera – something they do with some regularity. But this one’s different. The Sony A1 is their first camera that’s truly worthy of the title “flagship”. It certainly seems to beat both the Canon 1DX Mark III and Nikon D6 in almost every aspect, but how does it compare to Sony’s other higher-end models like the A9 II speed demon and the recently released A7S III?...

Red S New Low Budget Rf Mount Komodo Cinema Camera Will Shoot 6K

With yesterday’s announcement of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, I thought we might see a little more information come out about the RED Komodo not too long after. The Komodo is to be RED’s “low budget” cinema camera. There’s still much we don’t know about the new camera, although a new teaser from RED president Jarred Land does seem to confirm that it’ll shoot 6K. I suppose it isn’t really much of a surprise that the Komodo will shoot 6K....

Review Photography Composition And Design

I recently had the pleasure of reading through Tavis Leaf Glover‘s latest book Photography Composition and Design. A book that aims to take the complex nature of composition and make it easily digestible in order to pass on 100’s if not 1000’s of years worth of information passed on through the ages. While art is something that is almost entirely subjective, there are certainly traits and techniques that can be included / learned about in order to “improve” your work....

Rhino Approaches Cameraman For A Nice Belly Rub

While he was shooting a film about rhino poaching, filmmaker Garth De Bruno Austin had the most amazing and unordinary experience. A wild rhino approached him, asking for a belly rub. I’m used to doing this with cats and dogs, but this is something really out of the ordinary. And it may be the cutest and the most unusual encounter you’ll see today. Garth has been filming this particular rhino for a couple of years....
