According to a recent rumor, some or all of Kodak Alaris film business might be sold as soon as March current year. Reportedly, the company has out its film, paper and photo chemical assets up for sale in an attempt to cover around $2.7 billion worth of debt. This news came as a surprise, considering that Kodak brought back Ektachrome film in 2018 and introduced it in 120 and large format just recently....

Teased by Xiaomi just a few days ago for their upcoming Mi Mix 4 smartphone, Samsung has now officially announced its new 108-megapixel ISOCELL sensor. This marks the first smartphone sensor to go beyond 100-megapixels, replacing Samsung’s 64-megapixel sensor announced in May, as their highest resolution smartphone sensor. Samsung’s ISOCELL technology was first announced in 2013. It reduces “colour-cross talk” between neighbouring pixels by introducing a physical barrier between each one....

At the recent Unpacked event, Samsung introduced an AI-powered feature resembling Photoshop’s Content-Aware Fill tool. It’s called Object Eraser, and it will let you delete unwanted people from your photos in two clicks. Object Eraser comes as a part of Samsung’s One UI 3. It’s the latest interface for S21, but it will also be compatible with Galaxy devices starting with an Android 11 update. Basically, this feature is like a phone version of Content-Aware Fill....

Samyang has now officially announced their new XP 50mm f/1.2 lens. It’s the third in the “XPert” series designed specifically for full frame Canon EF users. It adds to the XP 24mm f/2.4 and XP 85mm f/1.2 announced last September. Unlike the 24mm f/2.8 EF lens announced last month, this is a manual focus lens, to match rest of the XP series. Designed to take advantage of 50MP+ and 8K resolutions, the XP line is built for premium quality....

Optics brand Samyang has announced its brand new lineup of auto-focus cine lenses, the V-AF range. The lenses have been designed with all video creators in mind, from a single one-man-band filmmaker to full production teams. They are made for full-frame E-mount systems and are fully interchangeable and Samyang says that with the launch of these new lenses they are making it easier to create high-quality videos. The first lens to be released will be the V-AF 75mm T1....

E/V Nautilus is an exploration vessel exploring unknown regions of the ocean. And just in time for the New Year celebration, the deep sea treated them with quite unusual fireworks. Their camera filmed a rare Halitrephes maasi jellyfish at 4,000 feet depth. Its vibrant colors glow when it’s lit, and the gorgeous creature threw an amazing show for the crew and the viewers. As written on Nautilus’ website, the jellyfish came into view at 1225m in the Revillagigedo Archipelago off Baja California, Mexico....

We’ve seen all sorts of dual camera configurations in smartphones since they were first introduced a few years ago. Often times, various manufacturers would use the second lens for either optical zoom, or for creating bokeh shots. However, we’ve never heard of it being employed exclusively to shoot 4K video–that is of course until Sharp showed up with the new Aquos R2. The Japanese electronics company may not be known for smartphones, but their newest high-end offering might just have enough oomph to launch them into this competitive industry....

“Natural light photographers” is a strange term. To some it’s a badge of honour, stating that they either don’t need to use flash to get what they want, or that they simply don’t like “the look of flash”. To others, it’s generally derogatory, suggesting that somebody only uses natural light simply because they don’t know how to use flash. But both are excellent options for lighting up a subject. Sony has now officially announced its tiny trio of compact full-frame E mount primes. The set is comprised of FE 24mm f/2.8, 40mm f/2.5 and 50mm f/2.5 G lenses, although they’re probably not quite as inexpensive as you might have been expecting. The lenses are priced at $599 each for all three 24mm, 40mm and 50mm focal lengths – which, given their relatively slow apertures, doesn’t sound all that great, but their compact size is definitely very attractive....

The LED panel and LED Bowens mount are both familiar form factors of LED lights. In the last two years, we are seeing a third type of LEDs enter the market – the Mat LED, A.K.A Flex-LED. Essentially it is very similar to an LED panel, only instead of the LEDs being mounted to a rigid surface, they are placed on a flexible mat, hence the name – Flex light....

Tamron has announced some new firmware updates for three of their F mount lenses to add compatibility for “general operations” with the Nikon Z7 and FTZ adapter. Benro is preparing to release two new tripods via Kickstarter. They’re called the Benro Theta and Theta Max, and they’re sort of “smart” tripods. One of the biggest features they boast is that they’re auto-levelling tripods – the world’s first, they say. I have to admit, when I saw the video of one in action, it didn’t do it the way I thought it would. When we think of “auto-levelling” cameras, we typically think of gimbals....

This is another one of those photography products that’s either really dumb or absolute genius. I haven’t quite decided yet. Most photographers who shoot outdoors will have to deal with the rain at some point. Personally, I defend against it by using weather sealed gear. But that’s not an option for every photographer. Devised by a small team in Brooklyn, the Camera Canopy is another way around that problem. It’s essentially an acrylic roof that attaches to your hotshoe and goes over your camera and lens, protecting it from the rain falling down from above....

I see a lot of jibs, sliders, cranes and other doohickies appear across my screen as new gear is announced. Other than the ridiculous ones they use in Hollywood, not many of them grab my attention.
