Photographer Matilde Gattoni has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft over alleged copyright infringement. According to the lawsuit, Microsoft used Gattoni’s photos in an article on MSN. However, she claims that the company didn’t license the photos, nor they had her permission to use them. Law Street Media published the court documents, containing the lawsuit and the exhibits. The article in question was published on 24 January 2020 on MSN and it’s titled These are the women leading China’s wine revolution....

Despite rumours, Panasonic has said they aren’t quite ready to abandon the Micro Four Thirds mount just yet, and it seems that promise is coming true. Panasonic is preparing to announce a new video-focused BGH1 video camera. It has a 10.28-megapixel Micro Four Thirds sensor and while it does offer basic stills capability, it’s most definitely designed for video and Panasonic seems to be aiming it a rather specific type of customer....

Nature Talks has announced the results of the Nature Photographer of the Year 2022 competition. This year, polar bears took the victory. Okay, not literally: it was Russian photographer Dmitry Kokh who took the photos of these animals in quite an unusual setting. It seems the fakes are out in force again at the moment. I’ve seen a number of posts across Facebook and other social media where people have ordered SanDisk and other SD cards only to receive counterfeit cards. These days, we need to be vigilant with memory cards. Memory cards are made to varying degrees of quality, and these forgeries are often whatever’s cheapest. There’s no quality control, because there’s no backlash on them....

In 2014, photographer Lawrence Schwartzwald sent 49 prints to German publisher Steidl, hoping to publish them as a book. When he requested the return of his prints, it turned out that the publisher had lost them. After extensive litigation, a German court has still ordered Steidl to return the prints to the photographer.Advertisements As Artnet News reports, Schwartzwald selected 49 prints of New Yorkers reading, each of them valued at $1,200....

Well, it looks like it might not just be our desktop and laptop webcams that we might be taping over soon, but our smartphones, too. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, set to arrive in high-end Android devices next year comes with an always-on selfie camera. That’s a pretty big issue. About the new technology, Qualcomm Technologies Vice President of Product Management Judd Heape introduced this new “feature” of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor by saying that “your phone’s front camera is always securely looking for your face, even if you don’t touch it or raise to wake it....

1,270 of 41,000 glass negatives created by Hitler’s personal photographer and “key propagandist”, Heinrich Hoffman have been scanned into the US National Archives. Many of these negatives were broken and had to be reassembled in a process taking around 9 months to complete, overseen by Richard E. Schneider. The photographs were originally created as propaganda to help influence the public’s perception and opinion of Hitler. He was often portrayed as a hero, with carefully selected compositions, and angles to reinforce this message....

MPB, the world’s biggest retailer of used photography gear recently took a survey on unused tech in people’s homes. I mean, it makes sense, they’re a used good retailer, so they want to know how much potential inventory is out there. Despite having a presence in both the USA and the UK, MPB’s survey only covers the UK, but their research states that 53% of adults in the UK have a camera they don’t use....

Just when Pentax seemed like it might be starting to pick up, Nikkei Asian Review are reporting that Ricoh may be dropping the brand. There’s no doubt that smartphones are continuing to eat into camera sales, and Pentax has become a “money-losing” business. Nikkei say that Ricoh plan to “radically review” a production and manufacturing strategy targeting the Pentax and GR brands. One of the options includes withdrawing from the segment completely....

Russell Kirsch, the researcher who is considered a pioneer of digital imaging, has passed away earlier this week at the age of 91. He is the person behind the first scanned digital image and a creator of what we know today as a pixel. Kirsch was born in Manhattan on 20 June 1929 to Russian and Hungarian immigrants. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1946. He continued his education at New York University in 1950, Harvard University in 1952, and then the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)....

The current CompactFlash and SD Card standards have been around with us for a good while now. CompactFlash has already had its dominance challenged in the new battle between XQD and CFast, but SD has thus far been relatively unscathed. Samsung looks set to take SD head on with their new removable Universal Flash Card format, which packs up to 256GB onto a card about the same size of your thumbnail, but with performance five times faster than the fastest microSD cards available today....

Samyang has announced updates to two of its most popular manual focus lenses for DSLRs with the new MF 14mm f/2.8 Mk2 and MF 85mm f/1.4 Mk2 lenses. Back in January, during CES in Las Vegas, a strange object appeared on the Kodak stand. The Kodak KashMiner, the “Powerful Bitcoin Miner”. The idea was that people would be able to rent this machine for around $3,400, and then customers would be able to keep a portion of any Bitcoins it generated. Spotlite, who ran the scam scheme said that users would pull in $9,000 over the first two years, providing a $5,600 profit after taking their initial investment into account....

It looks like Sekonic is making good on their promise from July, they’ve now announced that the Godox module for the Sekonic L-858D light meters is coming. They’ve also announced a new L-858D module for Broncolor lights, too. Calm down, though, you can’t get them just quite yet. They’re not being released until November. But at least now we have a solid release date. The Godox module sits inside your L-858D (or L-858D-U) meter to provide a “fully integrated light metering workflow to Godox users”, according to Sekonic general manager Kenji Sawai....
