GoPro announced Karma – the company’s first venture into Drones (or anything non action cam for that matter), which took a lot of press, and DJI just let it happen and did not try to steal the spotlight....

Yesterday, we showed you a video of a somewhat agitated driver harassing automotive photographer Alex Stone, who he felt was trespassing on his “private driveway” (which police have confirmed was actually a public road), with his truck. Police were quick to take action and have now identified and arrested 52 year old Mark Gordon as the driver of the vehicle. As well as being charged with misdemeanour battery and vandalism, Gordon is facing a felony charge of Assault with a Deadly Weapon....

For the last seven years, they’ve been ranking new smartphones as they come out to see which is the best of the bunch. The process has evolved over the years, with new features and metrics added, but now they’re adding one more set of tests into the mix....
Edelkrone has launched SurfaceONE, their new 2-axis motion control system. It allows you to easily get straight, curved (targeted) and panning shots, and shoot timelapse with any of these modes. You control the motion, intervals and more through your smartphone, and the company says it’s “the world’s smartest 2-axis motion control system.” SurfaceONE lets you control the motion through an app available for Android and iOS. Soon, they expect to launch the Apple Watch support, too....
A Bloomberg report says that the world’s largest maker of drones, DJI, has discovered around 1 billion yuan (~$150 million) worth of employee fraud, and that “a number” of employees have been fired as a result. This number, according to the Financial Times could be as high as 29 employees – although DJI have not confirmed this. The report says that the fraud was discovered by DJI during an internal probe in which employees were discovered to have inflated the cost of parts for personal gain....
Minnesota has some of the most amazing landscape. Easily as beautiful as anything else the USA has to offer. Voyageurs National Park in Minnesota encompasses more than 340 square miles. It’s a watery wonderland accessible almost exclusively by boat. With travel photography, one of the issues is prioritising equipment. You simply can’t carry everything you could possibly want to bring. If you do then it often hampers the overall travel experience as you’re weighed down by equipment and have to constantly look after it. For me, on my current trip that meant I couldn’t justify bringing a dedicated macro lens, especially when I had the XF56mm and XF50-140mm covering the similar focal lengths offered by the two available macro options....

An FCC application from Autel Robotics describes a new Evo 2 drone is coming and you get a choice of three different camera modules. One that shoots 8K, one that shoots 5.5K or a dual-sensor option that shoots 8K as well as infrared thermal imaging 720p. The folks at FiLMiC Pro have released a new update that brings LogV2 to the app. It claims to offer up to 12 stops of dynamic range and provides footage bit rates as high as 140Mbps. Log first came to FiLMiC Pro in early 2017, but now it sees a pretty significant update. According to the test video above from the iPhoneographers, LogV2 offers up to two and a half stops more dynamic range than the “natural” camera with the latest iPhone XS Max, and even the older iPhone SE and 6S see up to about a stop and a half increased dynamic range....

Back in November 2018, Flickr announced that it was going to ditch the mandatory Yahoo login system. And now it’s finally happening. Over the next few weeks, all Flickr users will become able to log into their profiles even without the Yahoo account. It’s been almost a year since Flickr was acquired by SmugMug. There is little doubt that mirrorless is the big thing currently happening in photography. Even Nikon and Canon are finally starting to seriously (we hope) make the switch. One of the main names in mirrorless, Fujifilm, seems to be struggling to cope with the demand. So, they’re expanding their Taiwa factory in Japan to increase production. Fujifilm says that the new facilities at the Taiwa factory in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan will go into operation in September....

It’s interesting how many times we’ve seen animals steal cameras: lions, penguins, chimps, eagles… A PhD student of Western Sydney University also lost her camera to an animal, and this time, the thief was a giant crab. And it’s a pretty pricey piece of gear: a $4,000 thermal camera. The student Annabel Dorrestein does her research on Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. Funnily enough, this isn’t the first time she lost her camera to a crab....
3D scanning has started to become a more integral part of photography and video for many people. Whether it’s to scan real-world objects to render on a computer and drop into the scene in post or to be able to produce physical 3d printed models to include as part of the set, its use has started to increase over the last few years. It’s something that Google’s been working on for years, but this latest iteration uses what they call “volumetric capture” made up of 100 12-megapixel cameras and 331 LED lighting modules in a 360° setup to see all around an object to create a photorealistic 3D representation of the subject....

You might, however, be hesitant to return yours if you’ve not yet had it fall out of the sky. Indeed, it may fly perfectly for you, and never show any issues.
