There have been hints that Instagram would let us send messages from your desktop. It was enabled in the desktop app for Windows 10 earlier this year. And finally, now you can send Instagram DMs through a web browser. There isn’t an official announcement on Instagram’s blog about DMs in a browser. Ghosty is a stalker app that takes advantage of Instagram’s API to let users peek into private profiles. A year or so ago, I wrote a blog post on why I switched from Nikon to Sony. A few people asked why I didn’t move to the Nikon mirrorless system. And the answer was simple, I didn’t want to risk shooting a wedding with a single memory card slot. I shoot RAW to both cards at every wedding. And have a rigorous backup process once home too. I know lots prefer to have their backup as Jpeg, but if my main card failed, I’d still want to have the RAW files....

Facebook’s controversial “Instagram for kids” got under the spotlight again. The company’s own internal report has shown that Instagram has been causing mental-health problems in teenagers, especially girls, including even suicidal thoughts. After the report has leaked, Democratic lawmakers have started calling on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg again to drop the project. The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that Facebook was well aware of the harm Instagram could cause to teenage girls....

Leica has just announced its new APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH lens, coming in at the princely sum of $8,195. I’m never going to complain about the cost of a 70-200/2.8 again. The new manual focus lens is a Leica M mount lens with a 35mm focal length and a maximum aperture of f/2. This “fast” wide-angle prime features an apochromatic design with ten elements in five groups. Six of those elements are high refractive index elements which Leica says “virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations”....
Filmmakers, Veydra fans and everyone who is interested in lenses, pay attention! Last night, someone broke into Veydra headquarters in California and stole over 200 Veydra Mini Prime Lenses. The company is offering a reward for any information that could lead to returning the stolen lenses back to their inventory. Veydra has issued the announcement on their Facebook page, inviting everyone to share and help find the thieves. Lensbaby has announced a new creative lens today: Burnside 35. It’s a 35mm f/2.8 wide angle adaptation of the Petzval lens design. Burnside 35 adds swirling bokeh and vignette around your subject, with an effect slider that operates as a second internal iris. This slider lets you can change the shape and amount of swirl in the bokeh; all while adding or removing vignette and center brightness. Something like Instagram filters in real life....

Last month, a promising Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund LIT Flash, a powerful xenon wireless flash for smartphone photography. It seemed like a good idea and the project quickly exceeded funds. However, after reevaluating the project – it was canceled and the campaign is now closed. In the era of the internet, it’s not at all uncommon to find your photos used by someone else without your permission. This happened to Edward Kelly of Marlton, New Jersey, who found his selfie used in an ad. On Pornhub. To make things even worse, it seems that the ad has been on the largest pornography website for at least six years. So, when discovering this, Kelly decided to file a lawsuit against Pornhub, seeking more than $3 million in damages and compensation for the use of his photo....

Meike has announced a new 25mm f/0.95 lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. It’s a manual focus lens, which means it’s coming in Canon RF mount as well as Canon EF-M, Fuji X, Nikon Z, Sony E and Micro Four Thirds.
