Preventing revenge porn by sending your nude photos to someone else is probably not the way most of us would handle the issue, right? Well, Meta has come up with a “brilliant” idea to prevent your nude content from spreading across Facebook and Instagram. The company has launched a tool that lets you submit your explicit photos to a hashing database so that they can be recognized and removed from the platforms in the future....

I must admit I was a bit sad yesterday when Microsoft announced the end of Paint. And as it turned out, I wasn’t the only one. The reactions from nostalgic folks all over the world were so intense, that Microsoft decided to bring it back. Sort of. MS Paint will have no future updates, as it was planned. However, after the huge outpouring of nostalgia from the users, the developers decided to leave it in life....

On 5 October, SpaceX launched the Crew-5 astronaut mission for NASA fromnedy Space Center in Florida. This is the fifth crew rotation mission with astronauts using the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft on a Falcon 9 rocket, and NASA shared some photos and the video of the launch. The launch was broadcasted live on NASA’s YouTube channel, and the video is still available to watch in case you’ve missed it. The Crew-5 launch carried four astronauts to the ISS....

NBC’s Today show has attracted controversy after allegedly airbrushing an image of transgender swimmer Lia Thomas after she finished first in an event. The University of Pennsylvania student was competing in the NCAA Championships when the image was taken. Twitter users quickly noticed the difference between the images and called out NBC for its apparent doctoring of the image. Further investigation, however, reveals that there is more to the story than merely that of a Photoshop misdemeanour....

We’ve seen several uses of AI aimed at improving photos. Whether it’s improving their resolution, or turning selfies into decent portraits, they usually work on a single, existing photo. But a method from NVIDIA generates the photos of people that don’t actually exist. And it’s interesting and kinda creepy at the same time. The team of scientists behind the project has released a paper on the use of a generative adversarial network (GAN) to grow both the generator (which produces a sample) and discriminator (“adaptive loss function that gets discarded once the generator has been trained”)....

A brand new photography fair will be coming to New York City in September 2023. The fair will be called Photofairs New York and is run by the same group that stage Photofairs Shanghai. Photofairs Shanghai is currently Asia’s largest commercial photography event, and the New York event will be based on the same idea. The fair is described as being “a new contemporary art fair dedicated to photo-based works, digital art, and new media....

Nikon D760 rumours first started popping up around the time of Photokina 2016. We’d heard a few of them ourselves while at the show, along with early rumours of the D850. We were all a little disappointed when they only announced their now defunct KeyMission cameras. Then we heard nothing more until April when the D760 rumours started again. After that, radio silence once again. Now, though, Nikon Rumors is hearing new word that the Nikon D750 is on its way, and that its replacement (presumably called the D760) will be announced at some point during the first half of 2019....

It seems that Nikon dealers in Europe (or at least Germany) have received notification that the Nikon F6 has now officially been laid to rest, along with the Nikon D5 DSLR, the Nikon SB-300 speedlight, the Nikkor Ai-S 50mm f/1.2 and Nikkor 24mm f/2.8 lens. It seems that a lot of manual Ai-S and AF-S DX Nikkor lenses are also now listed as discontinued on the Nikon Japan website. Interestingly, though, the F6 isn’t listed as discontinued there....

A post has popped up on Nikon Rumors suggesting that Nikon is killing off some of their most popular DSLR lines. Specifically, the D3x00 and D5x00 series along with their “Pro” line of DX bodies, currently the Nikon D500. They say that they will “most likely” be replaced by mirrorless models. It’s a bit of a bummer, although not entirely unexpected, really, and this transition seems mostly limited to their crop DSLRs at the moment....

So, this came out of nowhere, and it’s highly unlikely to be a response to recent reports of Nikon’s withdrawal from the DSLR market, but the coincidental timing was too much of an opportunity to pass up. Nikon has released a new V1.05 firmware for 2013’s Nikon D7100 DSLR. It’s not a massive update by any means but it is a simple (and single) change that will make some D7100 owners quite happy....

Nikon Rumors has posted what appears to be an update to Nikon’s mirrorless roadmap which shows the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2.8 S lens as having already been announced. This differs slightly from the one Nikon released a couple of weeks ago which clearly showed it as yet to be announced. As with the lens roadmap published two weeks ago, the new roadmap lists announced lenses in blue with not-yet-announced lenses in yellow, but the Nikkor Z 70-200mm f/2....

The day has come: the Nikon Z9 has just been officially announced. After a few teaser videos and even a leak from no other than Nikon itself, we finally have complete information about the company’s latest flagship camera. The Z9 is a full-frame camera with a 35.9 x 23.9 mm 45MP CMOS sensor. The number of effective pixels is 45.71 million pixels, and the ISO ranges between 64 and 25600....

Contrary to another photographer’s opinion (one that is held by many others), there seems to be this doomsday cult that believes camera phones are going to make DSLR and mirrorless cameras extinct. And it’s certainly an opinion that has a semblance of logic behind it, given that there are far more photos being taken by phones today than DSLR and mirrorless cameras combined. Yet the idea of shooting primarily on an iPhone doesn’t sit right with myself, and that of my clients who would sack me from the job if I had to shoot it on an iPhone!...

Just a few days ago, Japan Industrial Partners, the company taking over Olympus’ Imaging division stated that they were going to start putting more of a focus on video. Well, it seems their focus has shifted sooner than anybody expected. Today, Olympus has announced the development of a new firmware update, being created in collaboration with Atomos, to allow the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and OM-D E-M1 Mark III mirrorless cameras to output RAW over HDMI, allowing them to take advantage of ProRes RAW recording in the Atomos Ninja V....

Reference mics can be a vital tool when it comes to audio. They’re the microphones that capture the uncoloured sound, with a flat response and almost complete transparency to let you measure the acoustic characteristics of the room in which you’re recording. They let you test rooms for echo and reverberation. They let you hear (and see, on charts) what frequencies your room naturally enhances or destroys. Reference mics can be quite expensive, though, so GitHub user loudifier decided to design his own and make it open source....

Panasonic has announced its new Lumix S 35mm F1.8 (S-S35) lens for L mount bodies, which includes Panasonic’s own S series cameras, as well as L mount bodies from Leica and Sigma’s fp and fp L cameras. It’s the fourth lens in Panasonic’s Lumix f/1.8 primes range, adding to the 24mm, 50mm and 85mm lenses in the lineup. It comes with a dust, splash and freeze-resistant design and Panasonic says that it’s an ideal lens for both photos and video in terms of both noise and focus performance....

Panasonic announced their new 8K organic sensor with global shutter back in February. Now, 8 months later, they’ve announced the first camera to contain the new sensor. Officially titled the AK-SHB810, this “8K multi-purpose camera” is scheduled to launch sometime in autumn 2019. It will be released along with the AK-SHU810 image processing unit. Essentially, the SHB810 camera pipes the output through a fibre optic cable into the SHU810 for processing....

If you enjoy historic photos and need them for any purpose, here’s a real gem. Paris Musées has just launched an online collection with more than 100,000 digital reproductions of classic artwork. Among them, there are 62,500 photos, all of them scanned in high-resolution and publicly accessible under a CC0 license. The Paris Musées’ Collections portal contains masterpieces of world-famous artists such as Rembrandt, Gustave Courbet, and Eugène Delacroix. When it comes to photographers, there are many scanned prints by Eugène Atget, the French photographer who documented Paris in the late 19th and early 20th century....

The 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is one of the most popular lenses out there for photographers. They’re versatile with a nice wide constant aperture and many of them are very sharp. But there aren’t many similar lenses available for filmmakers. Sure, you can just use the photography lenses, but they’re not really designed for the purpose.
