The original AirSelfie, released in 2016, was a pretty interesting idea. A phone-sized drone for shooting selfies. But it didn’t seem to really take off (no pun intended) due to a few limitations. The camera is low resolution at only 5MP and the battery life meant you only got a few minutes of flight time. With the release of the AirSelfie2, that flight time has now doubled (so you get 5 minutes instead of 2 or 3) and the camera’s seen a resolution increase to 12MP....

CamFi is a popular name when it comes to remotely controlling your camera. But two of the things you typically can’t control via a simple smartphone app are the zoom and exact focus of your lens. There are various options out there when it comes to video, but they typically tend to require a gimbal to work alongside them. Well, now, CamFi team have a solution. It’s called the CamFi ZF and it connects to the CamFi Pro, Pro Plus and a couple of other models via USB and adds focus and zoom control to the smartphone app to let you take charge remotely over WiFi....

The ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence (AI) image colourization were recently brought to public attention when several historical images were altered using digital algorithms.Advertisements Irish artist Matt Loughrey digitally colourized and added smiles to photos of tortured prisoners from Security Prison 21 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which was used by the Khmer Rouge from 1975-79. His photos were published in Vice and prompted outrage on Twitter. Vice removed the altered photos from their website and apologized to the families of the victims and the communities in Cambodia....

The first images of Sony’s upcoming FE 24mm f/2.8 G, FE 40mm f/2.5 and FE 50mm f/2.5 G lens trio have been leaked by Nokishita. They show a very compact set of lenses, from looking at the photos, which seem particularly well suited to small-bodied cameras like the Sony A7c or any of Sony’s APS-C models (despite being full-frame lenses). Other than the focal lengths and what we can see in the photos, there aren’t really any details or specs about the lenses yet....

Vivo’s X90 and X90 Pro have been out in China for a little while now, but today sees their global international launch. Both smartphones feature Zeiss cameras, with the X90 Pro sporting a large 1-inch sensor. Both smartphones feature 50-megapixel Zeiss camera modules, with the non-Pro model also sporting 12-megapixel telephoto and wide-angle cameras. The X90 Pro, on the other hand, features 50-megapixel wide and 12-megapixel telephoto cameras. With Zeiss optics in both devices, featuring Zeiss’s T* lens coatings, pixel shift, dual-tone LED flash, HDR and panorama modes, the expectations are high for this one....

Looking like something pulled right out of Wall-E, there’s a spherical object floating around the International Space Station. This object is Int-Ball, a camera drone that explores the ISS autonomously or via remote control from earth. Developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) the first videos of it in action have now been released. Int-Ball’s objective is to help alleviate some of the work done by the crew. JAXA estimates that the onboard crew spend about 10% of their working hours with a camera in hand....

There’s no doubt that the latest drones are safer than their older versions. Many of them now even include obstacle detection and collision avoidance technologies. However, safety issues regarding propellers remain unsolved. Thankfully, researchers from the University of Queensland has a high-tech but low-cost solution. They’ve developed a simple sensor system you can use on an existing quadcopter for just $15. The Safety Rotor uses a plastic hoop that spins slightly slower than the propeller....

So, that title deserves some qualifiers. It doesn’t sound as good as the Shure SM7B, but almost as good? It’s not a totally DIY project from scratch, more a modification of an existing microphone to put it into a new housing. Seeing the advancement of photo-related AI is impressive. Just as you can use it to remove stuff from your photos, you can add things, too. A new app named GANPaint Studio can “paint-in” completely new objects to your photos, or “restyle” things that already exist in your shots.Advertisements GANPaint Studio is a joint project by researchers from MIT CSAIL, IBM Research, and the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab. Basically, it lets you use a “brush” to “paint in” different stuff into your photos....

I guess most of us have seen graffiti incorporated in photography as a backdrop. But, Colombian artist Sepc has found another interesting way of combining photography and graffiti art. He creates murals that reveal their true colors only when you snap a photo of them and invert it. Sepc shares a bit about his process with DIYP, as well as a couple of photos of these “negative murals.” The idea behind the project comes from a technical challenge, which Sepc says is one of the main pillars of his work....

On the used camera market, the question you always see is “How many actuations does it have?” It’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask. It’s no more weird than wanting to know how many miles the used car you’re about to buy has done. The more it’s done and the more it’s been used, the less life there’s likely to be left in it, right? While some manufacturers don’t post the numbers publicly, pretty much all cameras come with some kind of expected shutter life count....
