On 18 May this year, Taylor Swift’s fans could watch rehearsal clips at her concert at Los Angeles venue Rose Bowl. The clips were played at a special kiosk, but mesmerized fans had no idea that their photos were being taken by a facial recognition camera. The photos were cross-referenced with a database in Nashville, all in order to spot stalkers in case they appear at the concert. According to The Rolling Stone’s report, the database holds hundreds of Swift’s known stalkers....

While their motherboards, graphics cards and other components have been extremely popular for years, their monitors haven’t always been held in the same regard. Canon has now officially announced the new 26.2MP Canon EOS RP full frame mirrorless camera, doubling their RF mount camera lineup to 2. The new camera is a fairly basic entry level body, but not only does it set a new standard for full frame entry level mirrorless, but it’s also the lightest and least expensive full frame camera that Canon has ever made, costing a mere $1,299. Photographer Matt Higgs got to check one out and have a play with it in the studio and for an entry-level model, and it doesn’t look too bad at all, when you consider the market it’s aimed towards....

Feiyutech has announced the newest pocket gimbal, the Feiyu Pocket 2S. In normal operation, it acts similarly to practically every other pocket gimbal on the market, but this one has a detachable gimbal, allowing you to mount the head pretty much anywhere you like while allowing remote operation with the handle. Separating the two doesn’t completely disconnect them from each other – there’s still a cable between them, but it allows you to attach the gimbal to clothing, helmets, or anything you like, really, without the handle getting in the way....

The old megapixel wars seem to have mostly died off when it comes to photography. But for video, companies are pushing for higher and higher resolutions every year, it seems. As soon as 1080p became standard, they started pushing 4K. Now that 4K has become more accepted, it’s time for 8K. It was only a year ago that 8K would cost you $77K. But now the new Fran 8K brings that entry price all the down to below €8,000....

Whenever I’d take either my Canon 5d’s or 1d’s out for personal work I felt like I was taking a gun to a knife fight. They are too heavy, too loud & quite often would get the attention of the subject when I didn’t want their attention at all. After apparently taking a bit of a break from the limelight, Selena Gomez appears to be back with a new song and a new video to go along with it. It’s received over 80 million views on YouTube so far, and it was shot entirely on the iPhone 11 Pro. The new song is called Lose You to Love Me, and the video appears to have been some kind of collaboration with Apple themselves....

I would have loved to have an ultra-wide-angle f2.8 lens to the 645Z. That would have been an advantage. On the other hand, many claims that a larger sensor with larger pixels will capture more light, so perhaps a f/4 lens could work after all. How did it go? How did the 645Z fare? Video shooters have been asking for it, and Panasonic has delivered. Panasonic has now announced the new Lumix GH5S aimed squarely at video shooters. It shoots 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, and the GH5’s 1080p limit has been knocked up from 180fps to 240fps. A reduced 10.28MP stills resolution offers double the pixel power for more dynamic range & ISO. It also includes V-Log and LUT support, allowing you to store up to 4 LUTs in the camera which can be utilised either while recording or playback of files....

Nitecore has announced the BB Mini, a smaller variant of the recently released Nitecore BB2 (review here). The BB Mini ($39.95) is a little less powerful than its larger sibling, but not by all that much. The BB2 puts out air at up to 80km/h (49.8mph), while the BB Mini still puts out an impressive 65km/h (40.4mph). The company claims that’s 185% of that put out by a more traditional rocket blower....

Kandao has launched its new QooCam EGO camera. Claiming to be “the World’s first 3D camera for instant immersion”, this small handheld camera features a pair of lenses and sensors for capturing two viewpoints simultaneously. This concept isn’t new, and there have been plenty of devices in the past that can do this like the Insta360 EVO and the Weeview SID, but this is the first that offers easy and instant 3D playback on the spot....

New start up, Staaker, has just released their auto-follow action drone for preorder. Most of today’s drones are designed to be flown manually with remotes. Staaker, though, see things differently. Gone is the traditional remote control and the FPV headset. No longer do you need a dedicated drone operator to record your extreme antics. This one just follows you around wherever you go. Follow mode isn’t exactly new. The Phantom 4, Yuneec Typhoon and plenty of others have had it for a while....

When shooting a video, you don’t always know how it will be edited, especially when shooting a documentary. Sometimes, the action happens only once, and you don’t have too much time to think. And when you need to cover an action or a scene, it can happen that your mind can simply go blank. Does it sound familiar? Living on Earth in 2020 was quite a challenge, to put it mildly. But when you move 400 km away from our home planet, it looks peaceful, quiet, and stunningly beautiful. NASA recently shared 20 top photos of Earth made by the ISS astronauts to remind us that our planet is actually a wonderful place. At least from afar. NASA’s Johnson Space Center explains that folks who live and work on the ISS “take thousands of photographs of their home planet every year....

National culture and history are often an inspiration for artists. Polish photographer Marcin Nagraba creates work strongly inspired by the ancient culture of Slavic countries, the culture that existed before Christianity came. His hauntingly beautiful photos are inspired by heathen beliefs and rites our ancestors had centuries ago. Marcin works together with a talented costume artist Agnieszka Osipa. She creates stunning costumes, so complex and beautiful that you’d expect to see them in a TV series such as Game of Thrones....

Nikon released their financial results for the first quarter of its 2023 fiscal year (FY2023) recently and it shows an increase in revenue in just about every segment of the company, including its Imaging Products Business – ie, cameras and lenses. In fact, when it comes to profit, Nikon reported a 47.8% increase over the previous Q1 period in FY2022 and overall revenue appears to almost be back to pre-pandemic levels....
