Android’s openness is something of a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows just about anybody to (relatively) easily write and publish mobile apps through the Play Store. But it also allows anybody to write and publish apps through the play store. And the checks to get apps approved aren’t quite as stringent as those found in Apple’s App Store. But Google is doing something about it. They’ve just pulled 29 camera and photo apps from the Play Store after they were reportedly pushing intrusive ads, promoting porn, scamming users via phishing and even stealing content....

Queen guitarist Brian May recently faced an Instagram ban after he posted someone else’s image without the permission or credits. The ban seems to have made him pretty upset, so once his account was back – he bashed the photographer who took the photo. According to May, the photographer named Barbara Kremer acted “rude” and “unfriendly” for reporting him to Instagram. What’s more, he even writes that he’ll be “tempted to have [her] thrown out” if she attends one of his concerts in future....

The ballot is done and U.K. are leaving the EU. Yea Brexit is full on. I am not really sure what will happen to our friends in the E.U and our friends in the U.K. but I think that photography gear from U.K. companies will have to be affected. I am not sure it the price will go up or down, or if stock will be easier or harder to come by, but changes are coming for sure....

When the news that Blackmagic were replacing CinemaDNG with their own Blackmagic RAW format, there was a mixed reaction. It’s Blackmagic’s own format, offering a lot of benefits over similar formats when it comes to speed, file size and efficiency. But it’s only officially supported by Blackmagic’s own DaVinci Resolve editing and grading software. Fortunately, though, Blackmagic released the new format with an API that allows 3rd parties to integrate BRAW compatibility into their software....

Bartram Trail High School in St. Johns County, Florida recently came under fire for photoshopping girls’ bodies in yearbook photos. After their yearbook was published, 80 female students reported that their photos were altered to remove any hint of cleavage. The students and their parents got furious, and so did the public. Riley O’Keefe, a ninth-grader at Bartram Trail, first noticed the poor Photoshop job done on her yearbook photo....

On December 20th, 2018, a winter storm in the City of White Rock, British Columbia, Canada made for some dramatic photos and resulted in the helicopter rescue of one man. The event started out as a photo walk with my adult daughter. Waves were crashing against the shoreline as we walked along the promenade which is a pathway usually busy with walkers. The wind was blowing in strong gusts and picking up water with it....

On that same post, I wrote what I knew and could gather at that time on the subject, so it could serve other photographers and videographers traveling with their equipment oversees. I was resolved to do this since, after returning from a photography tour in Argentina with a cornucopia of cameras and lenses, I was prompted to present equipment’s registration to a customs officer at MIA International. Needless to say, I was totally clueless on the topic but determined to find some definite answers....

If you’re like me, and you shoot mostly on location, power is an issue. For photography I solved those issues by switching to Godox strobes with light battery packs or integrated batteries. For video, though, power for continuous lights can be troublesome. Or at the very least, expensive. Some lights will allow you to use relatively inexpensive Sony NPF batteries, while others require expensive V-Mount batteries. I’ve found another solution to my continuous power problem, though....

We’ve recently learned that you can edit videos in Lightroom, at least as the “first aid.” Nathaniel Dodson of Tutvid demonstrates another unconventional use of Lightroom – colorizing black and white images. He turns a black and white photo into color using only Adjustment Brush and the adjustments within this tool. So if Lightroom is your editing tool of choice – check out this tutorial.
