The Amplified Fence Makes Birds Landing On A Wire Sound Like Something From An Alien Sci Fi

For those of us who shoot video, we know what an important element audio is to the overall production. Often we’ll set up elaborate recording setups with shotgun mics all pointed at our subject or we’ll record sounds to add later in post to really sell an effect. But what musician Graeme Leak has done goes far beyond that. He’s attached a couple of contact microphones to either end of a 50-metre long high-tensile fence wire to record the noise of birds landing on and shuffling around the wire on the way to the bird table....

The Kodachrome Trailer Is Here Telling One Last Story Of This Iconic Film

Last year, Netflix announced that it had acquired the rights to the Ed Harris flick, Kodachrome. It details the journey of a man and his son racing to develop several rediscovered rolls of Kodachrome film before the last lab capable of doing it shuts down. Looking at the trailer, Ed Harris’ character is his usual cantankerous old self. A bit like the one he plays in Westworld, with a little Grumpy Old Men thrown in for good pleasure....

The Battle Is Over My Micro 4 3 Camera Outsold My Full Frame Dslr In Image Sales

The battle is over, and full frame cameras have lost the race. Here’s why: I’ve been selling photos through a high end stock agency for the last two years. In my collection are images from a full frame DSLR, an APS-C DSLR, and several Micro 4/3rds cameras. After tallying my sales for an entire year, my highest selling image was taken with the Olympus OM-D EM10. That’s right, the entry level OM-D model....

The Blue Room Is An Epic Speedride Through A Natural Ice Tunnel

Speed riding is a terrifying combination of freestyle skiing and paragliding. Described by those who participate as “staggeringly difficult and dangerous as hell“, it’s very impressive to watch. When Swiss speedriding pioneer and Olympic snowboarding medalist, Ueli Kestenholz discovered a massive natural ice tunnel, he knew he had to go through it. So, he contacted photographer Marc Weiler. An insane location, 3,000m (around 10,000ft) above sea level in the snow and ice....

The Falcon Has Landed Working With Film From The Apollo 15 Moon Mission

I recently had the amazing opportunity to work with some very interesting historical media. A retired NASA engineer friend contacted me having found a box of photographic films in his desk drawer. Turns out the box contained two partial rolls and several cut slides of 70mm film from the 1971 Apollo 15 mission! What a find! According to my engineer friend, these are not unpublished images. They are, however original films from the customized Hasselblad EDC (Electronic Data Cameras) medium format cameras used on the lunar surface, and include numerous images of the astronauts, the Lunar Module — the “Falcon” (LM-10), and Lunar Rover (LRV)....

The K Lens One Turns Any Camera Into A Light Field Camera To Capture Both Image And Depth Information

Although the idea’s been around for a while, it wasn’t until Lytro came along with their whole “this camera lets you refocus in post” talk that the whole Light Field Photography thing really hit the popular consciousness. Now, it’s been around for a little bit, and while Lytro switched from photography to Hollywood, ditched their previous customers and sold out to Google, they weren’t the only player in the game....

The Litra Torch 2 0 Boasts Improved Waterproofing Better Cri And Longer Battery Life

The original Litra Torch was a very decent little light. Aimed at action and adventure action camera shooters, it offered a lot of punch for its small size. Litra Torch 2.0 – $90 The Litra Torch 2.0 contains the same LED lenses as the Litra Pro, which allows for less glare, a more concentrated beam angle and much better colour accuracy, bringing the CRI up from around 70 to a very impressive 94....

The New Laowa 12Mm F 2 8 Is Designed For Full Frame And Almost Distortion Free

Ultrawide angle lenses are practical and fun. Almost every landscape, architectural, wedding or event photographer has one, as do many filmmakers. I have one, too. The problem with most of them, though, is barrel distortion. Usually, the wider the lens, the more of it you get. You can fix Barrel distortion in Lightroom, but it’s easier if you don’t have to deal with it at all. The new Laowa 12mm f/2....

The Nikon Gear Vault At The Tokyo Olympics Shows Not A Single Z Mount Mirrorless Camera

The long-awaited 2020 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo have begun. And as usual, the camera companies are there, too. Back in 2016, we got to take a look inside both the Nikon and Canon gear storage to see what they had available for NPS and CPS shooters at the Rio Olympics. Now, we have a chance to see what Nikon’s brought to Tokyo, courtesy of Vincent Kalut. Sure, it’s cool to just look at pictures of a room full of gear, but I think a look inside the Nikon camp at this year’s Olympics is quite revealing....

The Photon Is A Tiny Open Source Handheld Light Meter Powered By A Raspberry Pi Pico

Light meters have been a bit out of fashion for a while – although you’ll get my Sekonic from my cold dead hands! – but they have started to make a little bit of a comeback over the last couple of years. It’s partly due to the resurgence of film and cameras that don’t contain built-in meters but also the value that some photographers find it provides in their work....

The Photopistol Is A 3D Printable Pistol Grip For Holding And Shooting Your Camera

While words like “shoot” might sometimes get you into trouble on certain social media platforms, this is a device that blurs the lines between its two typical uses. This is the Photopistol. It’s a pistol grip for mounting your camera two with a “trigger” that fires your camera. It’s designed by the user TH1813254617 on Printables, and it actually looks pretty neat – and perhaps more useful than a mere gimmick....

The Sony A7Riii Is The Fastest Camera Out There For Tethered Shooting Moving Photos In Under A Second

Of all the features I’ve read about regarding the Sony A7RIII, this is the one that’s probably impressed me the most. I don’t often shoot tethered, but when I do, it’s often quickly. Usually, I’ve got animals in front of the camera, and they tend not to take direction very well. So, I’m shooting fast, then waiting for the computer to catch up. According to this video from photographer Evan Guttman, that waiting all goes away with the new A7RIII....

The Ultimate Focus Stacking Guide For Landscape Photographers

It’s becoming harder to get the entire image sharp with the constantly wider lenses and more extreme foregrounds that are used in today’s photography. Even optimal apertures aren’t enough to get both the foreground and background as sharp as desired. That doesn’t mean that it’s impossible, though. Focus stacking for sharper images has become a go-to technique for photographers of all levels to achieve images that are sharp all the way through....

There Is Now A Website That Lets You Get And Give Honest Feedback On Photographs

This is quite an interesting idea. ARS is a new platform which allows you to give and receive critique on photos completely anonymously. Created by Eric Kim, the system is designed to help photographers get some genuine feedback without all the smoke blowing and fluff we often see on platforms such as Facebook. When identities are public, many who respond to images will say something nice just to avoid the risk of offending, than to say what they really think of an image....

These Custom Fpv Drones Let You Film Both In The Air And Under The Water Sort Of And It Looks Amazing

Underwater drones or at least drones that can land and take off from water have become quite a thing over the last couple of years. Most true underwater drones can only operate underwater and don’t fly. Most airborne drones that can land on the water can’t exactly swim underneath it. FPV pilot Blaster, however, has figured out how he can film both in the air and underwater the same flight....
