I believe we’ve all seen the famous Earthrise photo taken by the Apollo 8 crew 50 years ago. But thanks to a Chinese satellite that’s currently in lunar orbit, we get to see the Erath and the Moon from a totally different and rare perspective. On 3 February current year, the satellite captured an image of the far side of the Moon with our planet in the background. The photo was taken with a camera linked to an amateur radio transceiver on board the Chinese DSLWP-B/Longjiang-2 satellite....

The historic West Bottoms district of Kansas City is fighting back against photographers. They’ve been battling what seems to only be describable as a “swam” of photographers taking over the area for photo shoots. There’s a new camera app in town. It’s called SOVS and it’s designed to help you get those perfect Instagram photos whenever you hand your phone to somebody else to get a shot for you. Now, you no longer need to worry if that person clutching your phone knows how to shoot a decent photo. There’s also a SOVS2 app for group photos, too. I’ve no idea what they’re saying in their promotional videos, but the point is quite obvious and they’re pretty funny....

Artist and “a digital media toolsmith” Øyvind Kolås has recently published a visual experiment that took the internet by storm. He created a simple, but effective optical illusion which messes with your brain, making you see a color image when it’s actually black and white. In Øyvind’s experiment, an over-saturated colored grid is overlaying a grayscale image to cause color assimilation. Also known as Von Bezold spreading effect, in this phenomenon the perceived color of a region shifts toward the color of the neighboring region....

Iranian photographer Alireza Rostami has a true DIY spirit. He loves repurposing old and broken stuff and turning them into camera gadgets (or even into an actual camera). This time he combined a broken flash and an old watch and created a powerful, wearable camera flash. Alireza used broken pieces of an old flash and connected it to his Olympus 35 RC rangefinder camera. He had to put the power supply and control in his pocket and connect the camera to the watch using two wires....

If you enjoy watching time-lapse videos, then you’ve heard of Morten Rustad. After his video “NORWAY – A Time-Lapse Adventure”, he now has a new gorgeous time-lapse video out. “SEASONS of NORWAY – A Time-Lapse Adventure” is recorded in 8K, and it covers 20,000 kilometers of a beautiful country of Norway. It was shot within a course of one year, showing the divine beauty of Norway throughout four seasons....

If there’s such thing as ASMR videos for photographers, it must be the videos of camera shutter sounds. Ace Noguera created an interesting and slightly different kind of such video. He collected nine cameras dating from the 1940s to 1990s and recorded their shutter sound. Other than being oddly satisfying, this video is also a brief history of film camera shutter sounds. Ace says that he had this idea for years and now he finally put it together....

A life-threatening TikTok challenge has reportedly been going around. It’s called “Blackout Challenge” and it encourages kids to choke themselves until they pass out. Sadly, many have attempted to do it, and at least three of them have lost their lives so far. As WPPI2018 comes to an end, CP+2018 fires up, which means yet more new gear announcements. First off the block is Tokina with their new Opera 50mm f/1.4 FF (full frame) lens for Nikon and Canon DSLRs. TTArtisan, famous for its inexpensive manual focus lenses has decided to go autofocus, and they’ve done it in quite a big way coming to five different camera systems at once. Announced today, TTartisan AF 32mm f/2.8 is a full-frame autofocus lens, although a couple of the new mounts are for APS-C cameras. In full-frame flavours, the new lens will be coming in all three of the major mirrorless camera mounts....

But HDMI socket placement always seems to be an issue with many monitors. On the FH7, the HDMI ports are underneath pointing straight down, but they’re very close to the mounting thread, making it a very tight fit for HDMI cables....
