The dual pixel sensor of the 5D Mark IV has two main functions. One is to improve the accuracy of the autofocus. The other gives you slight focus adjustment capabilities in post – a bit like Lytro. The latter is called dual pixel raw. At the moment (well, for those who already have a 5D Mark IV), the dual pixel raw feature is only available to users of Canon’s own software; Digital Photo Professional....

Earlier this month, a Reddit post sparked a big discussion about Apple slowing down old iPhone models. The post blew up quickly, and Apple has recently admitted: they are deliberately slowing down the processor on the older phones. However, their claims are different from the widespread opinion. Instead of forcing you to buy a new iPhone, Apple says this is happening to protect the phones with older Li-ion batteries. Reportedly, a simple battery change should make the processor speed up again....
For a few years now I have been using various different filters. I mostly use them to reduce the overall light coming into the camera or to help control reflections. It seems though I always overlooked one type of filter: the graduated neutral-density filters (ND Grad for short) I honestly thought that graduated neutral-density filters wouldn’t work very well in the real world. While they offer a reduction of light on selective parts of your image, they do so in horizontal lines....

Whenever a new lens is announced, we always get a breakdown of the optical elements that make up the whole. So many elements in however many groups. It looks like Leica cameras are expensive even when they’re completely unusable. A fire-damaged, broken Leica M4 was recently sold at an auction for £1,200 (~$1,700). With premiums and taxes, it reached the final price of £1,488, which is around $2,100. Kosmofoto discovered this interesting listing in a Facebook group Vintage Camera Collectors. The auction house Flints described the camera as “chargrilled” in the listing, but there is not much info on how it got in such bad condition overall....
A new law has recently been signed in California, making it illegal for first responders to take unauthorized photos of dead bodies at crime and accident scenes. The “Kobe Bryant Law” was inspired by the tragic death of the basketball superstar in January this year and the unauthorized uses of the accident scene images that occurred later. On-camera microphones have become a huge industry in the last few years. It used to be the only time I ever saw on-camera microphones, it was to create a sync track in the camera, or for emergency news interviews and such. Ever since DSLRs and mirrorless cameras became video-capable, though, their sales have skyrocketed. And they’re now the primary type of microphone for many vloggers and online video creators. You’re still going to get the best results with a boomed shotgun or lav mic (yes, that’s a subjective statement), but on-camera mic technology has come a long way....

Ahead of the expected August announcement of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon Rumors are said to be receiving reports that “more than a few” Canon preferred photographers have been able to get their hands on one. With 4K video, and 1080p @ 120fps being the only seemingly reliable bits of info at the moment, other firm specs are somewhat scarce. 4K video at 60fps has been speculated, although not confirmed, but if the 120fps for 1080p video holds true, then it’s definitely not outside the realm of possibility....
When Canon announced the EOS 90D and EOS M6 Mark II cameras recently, a lot of people were wondering whether or not it would shoot 24 frames per second. Canon has now released PDF versions of the user manuals for both cameras, and they both seem to confirm that neither camera will shoot 24 frames per second at either 4K or 1080p resolution. Both cameras are pretty similar in many respects....
Canon has refreshed its popular EOS R6 mirrorless camera with a new Canon EOS R6 Mark II. Externally, the two cameras look extremely similar, but the new camera offers some significant upgrades over its predecessor with a new sensor, focus breathing correction and an EOS R3-like autofocus system with improved AI tracking. A brand new IBIS system also offers up to 8 stops of stabilisation. While the EOS R6 Mark II offers the same 12fps continuous shooting mode with the mechanical shutter as the EOS R6, you now get up to 40fps with the electronic shutter....
Canon Europe has released the Advanced User Guide for the recently announced Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera. Yup, that’s right, the whole thing as a downloadable PDF file. The 919-page document (yes, nine hundred and nineteen pages) covers everything from the setup and basic operation to the different shooting and metering modes, autofocus, video and wireless features. Despite being the “Advanced” user guide, it does start off extremely simple for those who just happened to spend several thousand dollars on their first ever camera....
Although all eyes are on Canon 6D Mark II, there is another announcement from this company. They have released Canon EOS Rebel SL2, an entry-level DSLR intended mainly for the first-time DSLR users. Whether you’re just switching from a smartphone or point-and-shoot camera, or starting photography from the very beginning – Canon has intended this model for you. It’s a new and improved version of its predecessor EOS Rebel SL1, so let’s see what’s changed and what it’s offering....
Canon has apparently added a new RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM lens (4857C005) and EW-83P lens hood (4859C001) to its latest product list. The lens had been previously rumoured to be on the way, although the tweet from Nokishita now suggests that an announcement is imminent. Nokishita also says that two other lenses with the codes 5050C005 and 5051C005 have been registered with overseas certification bodies, bringing the total of unreleased lenses to three....
China’s Mars rover Zhurong arrived at the Red Planet last month. It has already sent some photos back to Earth, but we all know that selfies are a must when you visit a new place. So, the rover recently also sent back its very first selfie. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) launched Zhurong on 23 July 2020. It made a successful landing on 15 May 2021 and it should stay up and running for at least 90 Martian days, according to CGTN....
