It feels like only yesterday that the world was being convinced that 4K is the future. Now, at a rapid pace, we’re already being pushed toward 8K. I’m not complaining. The higher resolution the cameras & capture devices get, the more options we get in post – even if the final content is being created for 1080p or 4K display. Sharp recently announced its new 8K broadcast camera a few days ago, and now Blackmagic have come along with their new DeckLink 8K Pro....

The body camera footage from Clark County Sheriff’s Deputy Jake Shaw has been released showing the moment he shot New Carlisle News photographer, Andy Grimm. Grimm had left work to cover a lightning storm when he pulled over to photograph a traffic stop. Seemingly mistaking Grimm’s camera and tripod for a gun, Shaw shot at Grimm twice without warning. The first shot grazed Grimm’s shoulder, and the second went through his torso....

For those of you that are unaware, a couple of weeks ago, U.K. online photography retailer WEX photographic, quietly announced that Bowens was coming back. And to many, myself included, this was a huge surprise. Why was it so surprising? It was surprising because in July 2017 Bowens went into liquidation and nobody’s heard a peep from them since, so understandably we all thought that was the last we’d ever hear of them....

It’s probably not much of a surprise to anybody at this point, but the organisers of the NAB Show in Las Vegas have announced that NAB 2021 has been delayed. Originally scheduled to take place in April 11-14th 2021, the date for next year’s show has now been pushed back to October 9-13th. The timing of the announcement could’ve possibly been a little better, given that most of the video industry is already feeling a little down right now about the fact that IBC 2020 was scheduled to start two days from now....

Canon has announced that they’ve developed a 19-megapixel global shutter full-frame CMOS sensor. There are four different models of the same LI5030S sensor in colour, black and white, colour/near-infrared and full spectrum, all capable of shooting full resolution at up to 58 frames per second. Canon says that the new sensor will be ready to go on sale in January 2023. But don’t get too getting too excited just yet....

The controversial M-Fn touchbar which was introduced with Canon’s EOS R mirrorless camera is notably absent from the upcoming EOS R5, new images show. Japanese website DC Watch has posted several images of the new camera, including some from the rear, showing that the touch bar found on the EOS R is nowhere to be found. Instead, it has been replaced by the familiar AF-ON button and a joystick for your thumb....

A Canon patent spotted by Canon News at the Japan Patent Office, suggests that Canon is looking to downsize their in-body image stabilisation system to make it smaller. While IBIS has obvious benefits, the drawback is that it takes up a lot more space inside a camera than simply housing a static sensor. This might be why Canon hadn’t implemented IBIS into any of their mirrorless cameras before the launch of the EOS R5 and EOS R6....

Canon did everything they could to fight the mirrorless advance before finally capitulating with the launch of the EOS R. It seems, though, that it might be a case of too little, too late. According to Canon’s Q2 2019 financial results, their Imaging System department has plummeted 64% compared to this time last year. While the decline of camera sales is trending across all brands, this is a time when Canon is probably going to be hurting more than most....

If you’ve got a hankering for some Canon 8K but you’re a little disappointed with the EOS R5 then have no fear. Now that 8K is at least out there in the Canon world, it’s seemingly going to become more common. According to a report on Canon Rumors, Canon is set to introduce two new Cinema EOS 8K cameras in 2021. One will be a new flagship along the lines of the C700, while they say that the other will be a little more modular like the C300 and C500 lines....

Storage is definitely taken for granted these days. CompactFlash and SD cards are cheaper than they’ve ever been. DJI has today officially announced the new DJI Air 2S drone, rumoured only last week. And it does indeed look as that leaked teaser suggested, with an extra pair of sensors on top and a large 1-inch camera sensor. For years, I battled choosing a niche and style. Everyone will tell you to pick a niche if you want to find success, but I was resistant. In hindsight, I realize it was because I hadn’t found the right niche. And I wouldn’t have found it by choosing, I found it by doing some of everything, and from that, realizing what I enjoyed most.
