Hands up who has an Instagram account. I certainly do (@jaketraynor – shameless plug), and I rarely wander outside of the landscape photography realm. What I’ve come to notice after one year of using it is just how popular colour images are. There are some beautiful photos on Instagram. Amazing sunrises over ice shards, explosive sunsets over gentle beaches, waterfalls in the autumn glow. And then there are the images that have just had the saturation jacked all the way up – that are still incredibly popular....

NASA’s Apollo Program was an audacious mission to send astronauts to the moon – a national goal set by President John F. Kennedy’s in a bold speech in 1961 that was an ongoing part of the Cold War. NASA’s use of photography aboard spacecraft originated during the Mercury Program when John Glenn carried two cameras during his Mercury-Atlas 6 program: 1) a Leica 1g for ultraviolet spectrascopic photos, and 2) a modified Ansco Autoset (which was a rebadged Minolta Hi-Matic by the Ansco Company) which took the first human-shot, color still photos....

Chinese manufacturer Yongnuo is well known for its inexpensive flash units and radio triggers. More recently, the company have turned their hand to lenses. Adding to their fairly small 50mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2 lineup, Yongnuo have now announced a 100mm f/2 lens. Outwardly reminiscent of the Canon 100mm f/2 USM, the lens is initially available on Canon only. We can probably expect a Nikon version to come along at some point in the future....

Last year, Yongnuo launched a budget 100mm f/2 lens for Canon mount. There was a word then that Nikon version would come soon – and it seems the time for that has finally come. Not only they will soon present us with the 100mm f/2 lens for Nikon, but they’ll also introduce a pancake 40mm f/2.8. Both lenses will be for Nikon F-mount, aimed primarily at full frame cameras....

Zeiss is adding another four prime lenses to its popular cinema line. From now on, Supreme Prime Radiance Lenses will be available in 18mm, 40mm, 65m, and 135mm focal lengths, but there are also some changes and improvements aimed at making your footage even better. The Supreme Prime Radiance lenses already exist in 21mm, 25mm, 29mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 100mm. With the newest additions to this family, Zeiss also introduced the reworked and improved T* coating....

B-roll is a fact of life for anybody shooting or editing video. It’s essential. Whether an interview, talking head piece, or something a little more cinematic. It helps to break up the monotony of a single shot, it adds context, perhaps injects a metaphor or two. Many of us will film b-roll ourselves during the course of our production. There are so many neutral density filter brands out there that it can be difficult to know which one to choose. The choice becomes even more difficult when you start to look at super strong ones claiming 10 stops of light stopping power. You hear all the time about softness issues, vignetting and colour casts. But which one is the best? That’s what photographer Christopher Frost wanted to find out....

According to a press release from the National Park Service, a 72-year-old unnamed woman from California has been gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park. They say she got within 10ft of the animal “multiple times” in order to try to shoot a photo of it. There is no news on the woman’s condition, but they say she sustained “multiple goring wounds”. After rangers provided immediate medical assistance, she was flown via helicopter to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Centre....

7Artisans has announced their new 18mm pancake lens, the 7artisans 18mm F6.3 II UFO. As the name suggests, it has a wide 18mm focal length with a fixed f/6.3 aperture. It’s designed specifically for APS-C mirrorless cameras and is available in Sony E, Nikon Z and Fuji X mount options. This tiny lens has a diameter of 56mm and a depth of a mere 15mm, including the mount. It’s designed to be a bit of a walkabout lens for street photography, with a fixed f/6....

My wife Sara and I used to have this running joke leading up to her birthday each year. Each year I’d say “Honey! What would you like for your birthday?” and she would reply “I’d like a Hasselblad”. A close-up portrait of an American crocodile surrounded by luscious mangroves has won this year’s Mangrove Photographer of the Year Awards, run by the Mangrove Action Project. The image was captured by Tanya Houppermans in Cuba. The competition is now in its 8th year, and over 2,000 images were submitted from 68 countries. The images reveal “fascinating insights into the world of mangroves, while challenging us to consider both our place in the natural world and our responsibility to protect it....

I have been looking to increase my image sales from my headshot sessions. I decided before the COVID-19 crisis that I wanted to develop a portfolio of headshots with colorful backdrops, instead of my standard white and gray. I wanted to have quick access to all my seamless backdrops, so I could transition to new colors and give my clients different looks. The challenge I faced was that swapping out rolls felt too slow, and I was going to have more than three colors, and my green backdrop is wider than the others....

The pandemic might have limited our traveling, but India-based photographer Kunal Kelkar found a way to shoot a car on an Italian coast without leaving India. Well, sort of. He took some epic shots of Lamborghini Urus by simply placing it next to a swimming pool. And the car isn’t really a car – it’s a scale model that just looks so real in Kunal’s images. We spoke to this creative photographer about his process, and he told us more about how he turned this idea into reality....

A slew of new Sony FX3 images has been leaked by Nokishita ahead of the official Sony announcement expected tomorrow. There isn’t much in the way of specs, except for reports that it’s basically a Sony A7S III in a slightly different body, but we do now know its dimensions, 4K frame rate and weight, as well as what it looks like all over. Interestingly, despite the FX3 being believed to essentially be an A7S III targeted towards Sony’s upcoming Airpeak drone platform, the FX3 is actually a little heavier than the A7S III if the new leaked images are to be believed, coming in at 715g vs the 699g of the Sony A7S III (both with battery and memory card included)....

If you ever visited some industrial surplus shops, very often you would see some cameras and lenses used in industrial automation. But you probably do not know that these lenses can have very high optical performance and features we want: high resolving power, large image circle, low distortion, and often very long working distance compared to some of the other lenses we use. There are other lenses, but the best lenses are the so-called line scan lenses....

We knew it was coming. Adobe added raw support to Lightroom Mobile a little while ago for shots made with DSLRs. The newly released iOS10 also brings raw support to the iPhone’s built in camera. Although the iOS10 native camera app doesn’t yet support it, 3rd party developers have been quick to jump on the feature. So, it’s hardly surprising that Adobe are amongst the first. There is a caveat, though....
