Film and paper manufacturer Ilford has published a series of videos that will help you to get started. From loading film to producing your very first print, this series will teach you all the basic darkroom techniques that you need to know. Despite the original decision to stay operational, the coronavirus pandemic has forced Ilford to close down its factory after all. In the most recent statement, the company writes that the production will be temporarily ceased “until further notice,” starting today. “We stated last week that our principle concern remains the health and safety of our employees and this is still the case,” Ilford writes. “We are also looking at how we can protect the business through this difficult time....

The winners of the 2022 International Mountain Photo Contest have been announced. Now in its 8th year, the contest is organised by the Club Vasco de Camping Elkartea, a mountaineering club, based in San Sebastian, North Spain. After sifting through thousands of entries from more than 60 different countries the jury chose the 20 finalist photos. The First Prize winning entry was taken by Yhabril Moro, from Biscay, with “Young Gun”, a spectacular photograph of a ski jump under the sunset lights, at Baqueira, a Catalan ski resort....

The Instagram algorithm is something many of us love to hate. It’s an invisible entity we’ve been trying to beat over and over again to make our content more visible. But the truth is – none of us really know how exactly the algorithm works. Well, the company has finally decided to become more transparent about it and tell us more about how Instagram picks content for its users....

According to The Verge, it seems that Instagram are testing out a bunch of new features. Amongst them, there’s slow-motion video for Stories, Story reactions, and a mute button. It seems that we may also soon be able to tag Facebook friends on Instagram posts. The new features being tested look to have been discovered by Twitter user, Jane Manchun Wong. Wong has posted a number of screenshots showing some of these new features in action....

Sony’s A-mount – or, to be more accurate, what was originally Minolta’s A mount – finally seems to have been killed off. As spotted by Sony Alpha Rumors, Sony has removed all of their A-mount DSLR and DSLT camera from their product database on the Sony website. Retailers around the world are also now showing Sony A-Mount cameras as “No longer available”. It’s not an entirely unexpected turn of events, however....

Jason Momoa has issued a video statement apologizing for taking photographs inside the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel in Italy. It is strictly forbidden to take photographs and videos inside the chapel in order to preserve the frescos by the renaissance painter Michaelangelo. The Game of Thrones star and Leica camera fan is currently in Rome filming the nth instalment of the Fast and Furious film franchise and posted the images from his Vatican visit to his Instagram....

Two kayakers were enjoying the day along with other people, fish, whales, and birds in Avila Beach, California. They were watching humpback whales feeding when one of the whales scared the hell out of them: it almost swallowed them! One of the women filmed the whole experience, and it looks pretty scary. But when you look at it from the side, it’s even scarier. In the video, you can see a flock of birds circling around, and suddenly lots of small fish appearing near the kayak....

Despite now having about half a dozen triggers available for the Godox flash system, the Godox XPro still seems to be the most popular. I have six of them myself so that I can use all my Godox lights with different brands of camera. The main attractions for the XPro are the easy access to settings due to the array of buttons and that huge LCD. But in the rough and tumble of location shooting where gear often just gets thrown into a bag, that big LCD can become a liability....

Back in September 2018, Sony announced Animal Eye AF for its mirrorless cameras. The firmware update version 2.00 now brings this exciting feature to the Alpha a6400. In April current year, the Animal Eye AF became available for the a7R III and the a7 III. Matt Granger tested it out to take photos of his pets. He says it’s now flawless, but it can come in handy to help you get the focus right....

It turns out that the leaked photos of the “Phantom 5” are actually of custom-made Phantom 4 Pros. DJI specifically designed the drones for an “enterprise client.” And according to DPreview, this isn’t unusual for the company to do at all. Technically, most of the features you see in the photos including the interchangeable lenses, are real. The thing is, they’re still Phantom 4’s. DJI even confirmed it themselves. And regarding the alleged leaker OsitaLV‘s sketches?...

Just like the previous models, the upcoming Google Pixel 4 smartphone will be aimed at photographers. In a recently leaked promo video, we saw that it will feature a dedicated “astrophotography mode.” But now, there are some sample photos that show us what exactly Pixel 4 is capable of when shooting in the dark. And I have to admit, it looks promising. The leaked photos were shared on 9to5Google and they seem to be the official promotional images for Pixel 4....

After the killing of George Floyd on 25 May, Black Lives Matter protests have been arising all over the world. Some camera companies have given their contribution by dropping “master” and “slave” terms from their flash systems, and Leica is the latest one to join the club. Speaking to FStoppers, a spokesperson for Leica confirmed that the company is dropping the terms: FStoppers refers to an article I find especially interesting....

The Panasonic/Sigma/Leica alliance wasn’t the only thing that Leica spoke about yesterday during the Photokina press event. They’ve also officially announced the new Leica S3 medium format camera. There still aren’t really many details, but it does increase the resolution from the S2’s 37.5MP up to 64MP. sure, it might not be quite as high resolution as the GFX 100S Fuji announced yesterday, but that’s still pretty impressive. Leica says that the Leica S3 marks the tenth anniversary of the Leica S2, which was announced at Photokina 2008....

When images first leaked of a white Leica, I thought it looked absolutely stunning. I knew it was going to be well outside of my budget, but I didn’t expect the price tag it’s been given. The White Edition Leica M10-P has now been officially announced. A US price was not released, but the UK price is £12,750, which works out to around $16,700. Of course, you don’t just get the camera for this price....

We’ve seen animals snatching cameras before. While penguins, chimps and polar bears took some selfies, this lioness decided to use a pricey camera as a toy for her cubs. It happened when wildlife photographer Barbara Jensen Vorster dropped her camera, and the big cat snatched it and give her little ones something to play with. Luckily, Vorster had a second camera, so she managed to capture the playful bunch dragging $2,600 worth of gear around....
