Canon has today issued a press release confirming that the upcoming Canon EOS R5 mirrorless camera will indeed shoot 8K internal RAW video up to 29.97fps. It’ll also shoot 4K video at up to 120fps internally, and 4K 60fps externally. Additionally, Canon also confirms that there will be no crop factor when shooting 4K video, either. There have been a lot of rumours about the EOS R5, and in February Canon did indeed confirm a couple of them....

Last month, Canon Rumors reported that a 32-megapixel APS-C sensor was on the way from Canon. Now it looks like that information has been confirmed, according to a Taiwan certification agency. The document seems to be mostly in Chinese, according to Google Translate, and mostly seems to relate to a new wireless module. But it mentions that it’s destined for a new Canon sensor. DC126801 appears to be a new 32....

Although the overall number of photography and video productions has been cut short this year, there have still been many going ahead. Many photographers and filmmakers have taken to working from home, shooting products while other productions have been able to ahead with appropriate safety measures in place. That some shoots have been able to still go ahead, though, means that gear rental is still doing quite well. LensRentals has posted their annual lists of the most popular rental gear for 2020, and it’s an overwhelming Canon majority in just about every list....

Canon has just announced the latest firmware update for EOS R. If you’re a professional stop motion creator (or want to become one), this new firmware update is tailored for you. It’s compatible with Dragonframe stop motion animation software and designed to make stop motion animation easier, but it doesn’t come without some drawbacks either. The latest firmware update is all about controlling the scene more accurately. When connected to Dragonframe software, the update increases your Live View resolution from Canon’s normal 960×640 to 1920×1280....

I was shooting some images of the icebergs on the black sand beach by the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Iceland with a rental EF 24-70mm F2.8L II. Iceland is notorious for being windy, and while I was shooting there was blowing winds carrying ocean spray and water splashes all over me and my camera + lens. Unfortunately, it seemed that sea water got into the lens either from the autofocus switch, the “weather seal”, or the extended barrel when you zoom out....

Capture One seems to be growing rapidly in popularity. Since Adobe’s decision to split Lightroom up into multiple products, and ditch the perpetual license they promised would be around forever, more and more are making the switch to Capture One. Now they’ve announced the first major update to Capture One 11 with an 11.1 release. It offers workflow improvements for bulk editing, as well as support for a lot of recent camera & lens releases....

It’s not much of a secret that GoPro is struggling. They’ve dropped from a value of more than $10 billion at their peak to around $761 million today. Thousands of staff have been laid off over the last couple of years. And they also tried, and failed, to expand out into the drone industry. Recently, they announced that they’re opening up not only their technology and patents for licensing, but also the GoPro name itself....

There’s been quite a lot of drone fails recently. And no, I’m not talking about GoPro Karmas falling out of the sky. I’m referring to operator error. Idiots who don’t know what they’re doing, that can’t control their drones putting other people at risk. But, Microsoft think they have a solution with a new drone simulator called AirSim. The idea is to let people test and train robots in a virtual environment to prepare them for existing in the real world....

While the name Eric Paré might be very familiar on here for those who do light painting, many readers of this site might not know about his other activities with Xangle, often involving many cameras for shooting full 360° bullet-time sequences and capturing light paintings from every angle all at once. He’s even developed his own software for it, which you can buy. Eric likes to experiment with his kit, and as he had a stack of Raspberry Pi 3B+ with cameras lying around, he decided to see how far he could push them to shoot bullet time, and the results are pretty awesome....

I recently got my hands on a Light blaster. The Light Blaster Is a strobe-based image projector. Basically it’s a slide projector. You can select and project still images onto any physical space. They claim “unlimited possibilities for creative freedom“, so I thought I’d take it for a spin. It is seriously one cool piece of kit to experiment with. I mostly do cinematic portraits and it fits very well with my kit....

The M1 mirrorless camera from YI Technology was one of the biggest surprises at this year’s Photokina A company known for Action cameras, dash cams and home monitoring devices was now getting into the “real camera” market. With the way things are right now, it’s a very brave move. We showed you a brief first look at the M1 during DIYP’s visit to Photokina, and it sure was an intriguing little camera....

DJI have just announced the “World’s First 100-Megapixel Integrated Aerial Photography Platform”. And it’s a beast of a rig. Made with a DJI Matrice 600 with Ronin-MX gimbal and Hasselblad H6D-100c, it’s definitely a force to be reckoned with. But it’s not really a “World’s First” anything, or even all that new. It uses a drone that you can already buy, a gimbal you can already buy, and a camera you can already buy....

It appears that DJI is getting ready to make an announcement on April 27th. As per usual, there aren’t really any hints as to what it might be, except for the background image on the countdown timer on the DJI website. It certainly looks like a drone, though, with propeller blades creeping into the shot on either side. While they could be announcing anything, it may just be the DJI Mavic Air 2 – something which many have been waiting for....

The new year brings us new drone regulations across Europe. From 31 December 2020, they are going to be effective across all EU countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and the UK. DJI has issued a statement regarding the new rules and invited all users to “embrace them.” The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published a proposal for the new regulations in July. The proposal has been accepted and it should make life easier for drone pilots....

DJI has just announced the Mini SE, a tiny, lightweight drone that’s only one gram under the commercial limit. This means that you don’t need to register it, yet you can still take some beautiful photos and videos 30 minutes at a time. The DJI Mini SE is advertised as a perfect drone for entry-level pilots, and I sure know I’d like to try it out since I’ve never used a drone before....

Photography has always held a weird space in my head. In my mind, I make things that look neat. I have always held great envy to those who create such complex, emotional narratives to their images. I sit and observe with awe and wonder at the tales that come from them, their reasons for color, pose, and other infinitesimal details. Pixels for me are a means to an end, but it’s still something I can’t help but create....

I wrote about the announcement of the new Rotolight Neo 2 a couple of days ago. Looking at the specs, I wasn’t really all that impressed for my own needs. I have Spekular and Aputure lights for video, as well as Nikon & Godox lights for stills (all of which support HSS). So, for the cost, and limited power, the Neo 2 just isn’t worth it for me. So, I didn’t pay much more attention to it....

It’s funny how many things are being called out as fakes lately. It seems that most people think everything that’s posted to social media these days has been made by some kid in their bedroom with a copy of After Effects or Blender. The latest victim to the cries of “FAKE!” is a timelapse sequence created from a number of still photographs shot by Cassini back of the moons Io and Europa passing Jupiter’s surface in January 2001....

It was a rather destructive flood, especially for cities outside of Paris where entire towns, as I am writing this, are still chest-deep underwater. An event like this is pretty rare, the last time the Seine got this high was more than 30 years ago, and so yes, it is exciting to experience it but was for me also quite troublesome. You see, I live right next to the Seine; a few extra centimeters of water, and I too would have been stuck at home with my wife and toddler....
