Nikon have released a somewhat substantial V1.10 firmware update for the Nikon D5, addressing many issues that have been reported by customers. The biggest being the record time limit for shooting video. Electronic vibration reduction has also been added when shooting movies, while stills shooters receive a few very welcome additions for shooting through the viewfinder. A number of updates to the D5’s web interface when running in HTTP server mode have also been added....

Meike has announced a new 35mm T2.2 cinema lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. As a cine lens, it’s full manual focus and aperture control, with a wide aperture of T2.2 (stopping down to T22) and a fairly short minimum focus distance of only 42cm. American band OK Go are well known for their creative and boundary-pushing music videos. And now, they did it again. Their latest video features 567 perfectly computer printers and a whole lot of colorful paper. The wall of printers creates mesmerizing visualizations, and it’s described as “the world’s first paper mapping.” In the BTS video, band members explain that they shot everything really slowly, and then speeded it all up in post....

The Nikon 600mm f/4 E FL ED VR is a great bird photographer’s lens (and a super-pricey one). But Kai Wong wanted to check whether it’s better for shooting birds than a shotgun. So, he teamed up with Paul John Bayfield and they created a shooting challenge. Paul used Nikon F5 and the 600mm lens, while Kai tried his shooting skills on the gun. It took three rounds and some clay disks to shoot (figuratively and literally)....

Some of the specifications for the possible replacement of Nikon D810 were released a while ago. Now there are new updates concerning Nikon D820, and the one that catches most attention is that D820 might have the same autofocus system as Nikon D5. This means 153 focus points, 99 of them being cross type and 55 selectable. According to the reviews, D5’s AF system is impressive. It performs fast and accurate even with the fast-moving subjects and longer bursts, and it’s reliable in various conditions....

So, this is an interesting one and not something I’ve come across before. But a British photographer we spoke to reports having had serial numbers in his Nikon lenses changed after sending them in to be repaired by Nikon Professional Services in the UK. He says that Nikon told him they sometimes have to replace the part which contains the serial number. However, this may invalidate your insurance or future warranty when numbers no longer match up....

Nikon’s new 105mm f/1.4E ED isn’t officially available until the end of the month. A few lucky people have managed to get their hands on one, though. On that short list are photographers Lindsay Silverman and Vincent Versace, who have both posted sample shots to social media. I always find it interesting to see what comes out after a new lens is announcement. While there’s no substitute for trying a lens yourself, photos shot with them do show things that spec sheets cannot....

Well, this is interesting. According to the latest report from BCNRetail, Olympus has ousted Nikon, Canon, Sony and Fuji to top the sales in Japan for the month of February, thanks to pretty significant sales of the Olympus PEN E-PL9, taking 11.1% of the share and the OM-D E-M10 Mark III grabbing a further 5.2%. Panasonic has just finished their Photokina press event and officially announced the new Panasonic S series full frame mirrorless camera. And they’re starting off the new line with two cameras and three lenses. They’ve also confirmed the L mount collaboration between Panasonic, Leica and Sigma. With the collaboration confirmed, we now know for sure that the new Panasonic S series full frame cameras do indeed utilise the Leica L mount....

Poor Photoshop and CGI work may be called “a fail,” but hey, at least it never fails to make us laugh. Disney recently came under fire over a lame CGI work they did in Splash. The 1984 movie can be streamed on Disney+, but it comes with a terrible cover-up of Daryl Hannah’s butt. Unless you live under a rock, you’ve seen Senator Bernie Sanders and his famous mittens in a gazillion memes over the past week. The photographer behind the original photo is Brendan Smialowski, and he has spoken up about this whole meme-craze.
