As we’ve seen before, someone’s tripod and the camera can get confused for a rifle. This is what recently happened in south Kerry, Ireland. As a Cork-based photographer started setting up a tripod in Derrynane at Caherdaniel, a passer-by noticed him. The man thought he was a sniper and notified the police, which led to a dramatic and almost comical response from a large number of armed policemen. According to the Independent, the police followed standard emergency protocols....

I own a few odd-ball prime lenses that hover around the 50mm-ish lens length, and offer some unique bokeh, making them interesting choices for portrait photography. Canon is apparently all set to announce both the EOS R6 Mark II and the RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM lens on November 2nd. Or at least that’s what some very strong rumors are suggesting anyway after Canon placed some teasers recently. The updated version of the popular mirrorless camera the EOS R6 has been speculated to be coming soon for a while now, however, this is the first time we have seen any sign of when it will be announced....

Canon has announced another new member of its family compact camera family. The Canon PowerShot G5 X Mark II is an upgrade to the four years old G5 X. While the two models are similar in design and some specs, there are certain upgrades that could make you go for the new version: 4K video, a larger focal length range, up to 20-fps continuous shooting, or a pop-up EVF, to name just a few....

Well, this is a bit counterintuitive. Spotted by asobinet, Canon has patented a mechanism for a zoom lens mechanism that actually gets shorter as you increase the focal length. Yes, that’s right, the exact opposite to how zoom lenses normally work. The patent was published on November 18th to provide zoom lenses with large apertures and small size with high optical performance. A number of lens examples are included in the patent, including a couple with ranges of approximately 28-70mm and 28-60mm with f/2....

Canon has introduced PowerShot G1 X Mark III, the latest addition to their premium G-series of compact cameras. For the first time, Canon’s compact camera features a 24.3 MP APS-C CMOS sensor. Another novelty is the Dual Pixel auto-focus technology, which was also never featured in a compact Canon camera before. PowerShot G1 X Mark III has a 24-72mm equivalent lens with optical image stabilization and f/2.8-5.6 aperture. Judging from the specs, this is basically a “baby M5,” only with a fixed lens....

Well, if this turns out to be true (which is more than likely), it’s a shame but not much of a surprise. Canon Rumors is reporting that Canon’s not-officially-announced-but-pretty-much-inevitable flagship camera, the Canon EOS R1 is not expected to come “anytime soon” and that a retailer has actually been told not to expect it until the second half of 2023. When it is eventually announced, it will be the official replacement for the Canon EOS 1DX Mark III, a true flagship model....

Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) has been one of Canon’s biggest selling points ever since they first introduced the technology in 2013 with the EOS 70D DSLR. The technology has developed ever since, with the EOS R5 and EOS R6 cameras having some of the best AF performance available in mirrorless cameras today. But DPAF isn’t perfect. It’s fantastic if the edge contrast of what you’re focusing on is oriented 90 degrees to how you’re holding the camera, but if you’re holding the camera horizontal and the edge you’re focusing on is also horizontal, it can struggle....

It looks like Canon’s announcement is coming on July 9th, according to Canon Rumors and not July 2nd as previously speculated. But we’re not just going to hear about the new Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 mirrorless cameras. Oh no, we’re going to be getting all of those RF lenses and the two Teleconverters recently leaked by Nokishita, too. The image above appears to shoe the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 bodies along with some new lenses and the teleconverters, although CR points out that the RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USH and maybe the RF 50mm f/1....

Canon has just announced Image Connect, its new service for matching clients with professional photographers. It’s aimed to help people focus on the moment while a photographer takes care of the photos. Image Connect uses Canon’s RAISE photo community platform, and here’s how it will work: Through the platform, customers can provide basic details for the job, such as event type, location, and dateOnce photographers are matched with the customer through the platform, customers review photographer profiles and invite those they like to bid on the jobPhotographers create an offer which allows them to set their own price (rather than adhering to standardized pricing) and allows them to communicate their rates and value to customersOnce an offer is accepted, the job is booked through the platformFollowing the event, images are delivered electronically to the customers through a Canon customer portal...

After the rather disappointing reception received by the EOS R, Canon seems to be doubling down on mirrorless to show off how seriously they’re taking it. So far we’re expecting two new EOS R mirrorless bodies in 2019 (one entry-level and one “super-high resolution“) as well as three new APS-C DSLRs, and two EOS M bodies. That’s a heck of a target for a single year. But this isn’t all they’re doing....

Capture One has announced its new Capture One 22 software. Or at least, they’ve announced that it’s coming. With a release date of December 9th, it brings with it two pretty significant and highly requested features. The first is native panoramic stitching. Yes, that’s right. No longer do you need to export them out and bring them into another piece of software, you can now stitch from within Capture One itself straight from your raw files....
