After nearly two years of legal battle, Nikon, ASML and Carl Zeiss are about to settle all litigations. The companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will settle of all legal proceedings over patents for lithography equipment and digital cameras. By this agreement, Carl Zeiss and ASML are due to pay Nikon a total of €150 million, or approximately $170 million. The legal battle between Nikon, ASML and Carl Zeiss began back in 2017, after Nikon accused the two companies of using its patented lithography technology without permission or licenses....
Nikon D850 has been announced as the successor of Nikon D800 and D810. However, according to some reports, it may be the actually be the “baby version” of Nikon D5. In other words, as Nikon Rumors writes, the latest addition to Nikon family may actually be based on D5 rather than the D810. Nikon is soon killing its authorized third-party repair program. Starting from early 2020, more than a dozen repair shops will come down to only two facilities at the ends of the US. This way, the Authorized Repair Stations will become non-authorized and likely lose access to official parts and software. Therefore, you will need to mail your gear directly to Nikon, no matter where you live. According to iFixit, Nikon sent out a letter to its remaining Authorized Repair Station members to notify them of the decision....
Nikon Japan has announced that the installation files for ViewNX 2, ViewNX-i, Capture NX2 and Capture NX-D will no longer be available to download as of June 30th, 2022. They instead suggest that users download the latest version of NX Studio. Fortunately, NX Studio is free, so you’re not left completely in the lurch, but if you’ve been using Nikon’s old software, you should probably update. The removal of access to the downloads seems to be just a formality as the Nikon UK website already lists all four apps as being discontinued....
A new Nikon roadmap for 2020/21 appears to have leaked, according to Nikon Rumors. They have no idea if it’s legitimate, but the lenses are, as they say, plausible. With, perhaps the exception of one, which seems something of an odd decision to me. NVIDIA has today announced their new hotly-anticipated RTX 3050 and RTX 3050 Ti mobile GPUs for RTX Studio laptops. Designed for both gamers and creatives, the new GPU comes with a host of new laptops coming from the usual suspects like Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc. The RTX 3050 takes advantage of many of the new GPU-accelerated AI features out there like Smart Portrait and Super Resolution in Photoshop, Scene Edit Detection in Premiere Pro and the Magic Mask feature in DaVinci Resolve 17, offering some significant performance gains over the previous generation NVIDIA RTX and GTX-based laptops....
The entry-level Olympus PEN E-PL9 has received the “special edition” treatment. What’s so special about it? Well, it’s blue. Oh yes. But, the E-PL9 won’t leave you feeling blue after you use it. For an entry-level camera, it’s pretty capable. It houses a 16.1MP Micro Four Thirds CMOS sensor that’s capable of shooting 4K UHD video at 30fps and stills at up to 8.5fps. There’s a group of people out there that are often ignored when it comes to photography. That group is the visually impaired. With photography being such a visual medium, it’s an easy group to ignore. That being said, I don’t think camera manufacturers are intentionally neglecting this group of users. At least, no more so than they ignore any other kind of impairment. Accessibility options common to other electronic devices have always been lacking from cameras....

I was saddened to see this particular email show up in my inbox this morning. Online publication f11 Magazine is suspending its run, after only six years. F11 was created to have a focus on photography and the photographers who create it, rather than the gear. It was all about appreciating the work, and discovering the journey of those who make it. The Panasonic GH5 Mark II is expected to see similar autofocus performance to Panasonic’s full-frame S series mirrorless cameras. This is welcome news to Panasonic Micro Four Thirds users frustrated with the GH5’s lack of autofocus performance. But to be able to take advantage of the new autofocus system, your lenses are going to need an update. Panasonic has released a flurry of firmware updates for a dozen of their Lumix G and Leica DG lens lineup to make them compatible with the upcoming camera’s autofocus system and they’re available to download and update now for you to prepare....
Well, this was unexpected. Panasonic is apparently going to announce their first full frame mirrorless camera this month, in only three weeks. Yes, a full frame Panasonic mirrorless camera. At least, that’s according to 4/3 Rumors. Apparently, the camera will be officially announced on September 25th, but if this is indeed true, I’ll bet a certain website will have leaks available before then. The Nikon Z6 & Z7 mirrorless cameras seem to have split photographers down the middle....
Pergear has released their new 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras and Micro Four Thirds. It’s been released in Sony E, Fuji X and MFT mounts, but unfortunately for Nikon shooters, the company has confirmed to DIYP that isn’t coming in Z mount flavour (at least, not yet). But for those systems it is available on, it features a full-metal construction and comes with a very low $89 price tag....
We all have a shoebox or an album filled with old photos, slides, or negatives. Browsing through them brings back the memories and makes us relive them. Photographer Catherine Panebianco incorporated these old memories into new ones. She used her father’s old slides and incorporated them into new photos, creating visually interesting, but also deeply nostalgic images. Catherine named the series No Memory is Ever Alone, and she describes it as a visual conversation between her dad and herself....
