Along with the EOS R5, EOS R6, 600mm & 800mm f/11 primes and the 100-500mm zoom, Canon has today announced a new low budget alternative to their 85mm f/1.2 RF prime lenses for portrait shooters. The new Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM is a stabilised lens that should work equally as well for portraits as it does for macro. Canon says the reason for going with a portrait macro for this focal length was to meet the demands of customers, particularly wedding shooters, who need to get those detail shots as well as regular portraits....

Canon really has fought back at the claim that mirrorless lenses are too big with this one. They’ve just announced their new RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens and it’s ridiculously small, measuring a mere 119mm at its shortest length. It’s almost a third shorter than its EF mount equivalent, as well as being lighter. And it can be locked at its short 70mm end for travel and storage. It’s not all rainbows and sunshine, though....

Canon has announced the imminent shutdown of its main factory, the Zhuhai Factory based in Southern China. The factory was in operation for 32 years and was responsible for the manufacture of digital cameras, sensors, and lenses, the only such production base in the country. Rumours circulated last week about the imminent closure and were confirmed by a statement from Canon China PR rep Shen Yue saying “the operation of the company is facing unprecedented difficulties....

Apple has warned iPhone users not to attach their phones to motorcycles or scooters if they value the camera function. High amplitude vibrations at particular frequencies can degrade the phone’s camera systems over time. Apple released a long and very specific support document on Friday called “Exposure to vibrations, like those generated by high-powered motorcycle engines, might impact iPhone cameras.” The high-frequency vibrations caused by these vehicles can seriously mess up the functioning of the built-in camera system, gradually degrading the phone’s optical image stabilization, or OIS, and closed-loop autofocus systems....

There are some very daft suggestions and tutorials on TikTok. As I discovered when I tried a few of the photography hacks, there are several that it goes without saying that you just shouldn’t try. This one might take the cake though. After watching a video of a ‘hack’ where a photographer appears to deliberately scratch his lens with a rock to create a ‘cool effect’, one viewer actually copied it and fully destroyed her camera lens....

We’ve heard of drones that made it difficult for firefighters to put out fires. But on Tuesday, 6 March, a drone was responsible for causing a wildfire. Just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, a drone burst in flames upon landing, causing 335 acres of forest to burn. The U.S. Forest Service published on their Facebook page that it took 30 firefighters to put out the flame. They warned everyone to drive carefully and confirmed that the cause of the fire was a drone that caught fire after landing....

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has recently proposed that the laptop ban should expand to all international flights. This time, it won’t refer to the laptops, cameras and other devices in the carry-on, but in the checked luggage. Reportedly, the United Nations will consider the proposal in the upcoming weeks. If it gets accepted, you may not be able to put large electronic devices in your checked bags, no matter where from or where to you’re traveling....

Facebook has recently killed 10 large groups created for gathering likes on Instagram. Some of them had hundreds of thousands of members who were helping each other beat the algorithm. The members of these groups coordinate likes and exchange follows in attempts to make each other’s posts more visible. However, these groups have reportedly violated Instagram’s and Facebook’s terms of service, so they were taken down. When you type “Instagram” in the Facebook search bar, many of the results will refer you to groups for exchanging followers and gaining likes and comments....

Sending photos through various apps on our smartphones has become one of the most common means of visual communication. Every month, 17 billion photos are sent only through Facebook Messenger. So, Facebook has decided to improve photo sharing for their users. Instead of 2K, you can now send 4K images through Messenger. To be more precise, you can now send images up to 4,096 x 4,096 pixels per image. If you’d like to take advantage of the new feature now, keep in mind that you need to update your Messenger app....
