Adobe announced it back in October, but now it’s official: they have just released the final standalone version of Lightroom, version 6.14. Adobe announces that the software will have no future updates and encourages the users to upgrade to Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC.
When Lightroom CC and Lightroom Classic were introduced, Adobe announced that the final version of Lightroom 6 was coming out “towards the end of the year.” Apparently, this day has come. The latest (and final) update has fixed some minor bugs and expanded camera compatibility, and Adobe has added a note informing the users that there will be no more updates:
It’s familiar that Adobe has been focused on the subscription-based products, and they’re trying to get the users to upgrade. Some photographers still prefer the standalone software and are not willing to “rent” it from Adobe. As DPReview writes, if you go on using Lightroom 6, it’s okay if you don’t plan to upgrade the camera anytime soon. But in the future, you may have some inconveniences. When you buy a new camera, Lightroom 6 may not support it. Also, with OS upgrades from Microsoft and Apple, there may also be some compatibility issues. While you may continue to purchase and use Lightroom 6 with a perpetual license, Adobe will no longer provide updates to the software. Consider upgrading to the Creative Cloud Photography plan to get the latest updates in Lightroom Classic CC and the all-new Lightroom CC, and ensure that the software works with raw files from the newest cameras. Basically, you have two options. The first is to give in and finally switch to the subscription-based software. If that’s still unthinkable for you, the other option is to find alternatives to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop.
