It’s been rumoured, hinted and hoped that IBIS would be coming to the Canon EOS R mirrorless lineup at some point, and now Canon Image Communication Business Operations Group Executive, Yoshiyuki Mizoguchi, has confirmed that IBIS is is something they’re working on for future models in an interview with Amateur Photographer at CP+ 2019. They’ve also reaffirmed Canon’s decision to not kill off the EOS M mirrorless system or mount. The M mount will be for lightweight APS-C cameras and lenses, while the RF will be for their full frame mirrorless system.
Ditching the EOS M format and simply making an APS-C RF mount camera has been something of a concern, although Canon has repeatedly said that they have no plans to ditch the system. When asked if they were going to keep EOS M in its existing format or make an APS-C RF mount camera, Mr Mizoguchi responded…
So, while they have no plans for it, they’re not ruling out the possibility of an APS-C sensor in an RF mount body – as they have suggested in the past. And right now they say that they’re continuing to work on the EOS M system. When it comes to IBIS, AP asked how Canon responds to the many requests from customers and reviewers for an EOS R body with built-in IBIS. So, the goal seems to be for a dual IS system, with the body and lens working together to optimise for the shot you wish to take at the time.
