Canon’s full-frame lineup has proven to be very popular ever since it was initially introduced. So far, they’ve released four full-frame mirrorless bodies with the RF mount, but how do they all stack up against each other? Are the new EOS R5 and EOS R6 really that much better than the earlier bodies? In this video, Irene Rudnyk puts the Canon EOS RP ($999), EOS R ($1,799), EOS R6 ($2,499) and EOS R5 ($3,899) up against each other to see how well they handle when shooting portraits. As well as seeing how well it renders colours and AF performance and accuracy, Irene also looks at the technical specs and benefits each camera has over the other.
It’s an interesting look at the current state of Canon mirrorless and how well they all compare. What was particularly interesting was how badly the EOS R seemed to perform when it came to colour right out of the camera, especially when compared to the less expensive EOS RP – which was rather impressive. Irene says that all of the cameras were set to a manual white balance of 6500K, shooting raw and processed in Canon Digital Professional. Of course, the colours can be corrected in software afterwards, but it does potentially mean a longer workflow – unless you’re using software that supports a ColorChecker profile.
The EOS R5 appears to be the undisputed king in the Canon full-frame mirrorless lineup, with the EOS R6 coming a pretty close second. But I think when it comes to what you get for your money in terms of image quality, the EOS RP seems like it might be the best value out there right now in the Canon camp. At least, it might be if you’re not planning to shoot video.
