DJI has recently entered the action camera market with the Osmo Action. But not long before that, the company had launched Osmo Pocket, a tiny 3-axis gimbal that shoots 4K 60fps video. But which one is better? Which one should you get? MAURO’S FILMS has made an in-depth comparison and it could help you make a decision.

Image stabilization – Mauro tested both cameras while walking and running, and stabilization looks great on both cameras. I honestly wouldn’t know which one to choose if stabilization was the only factor. Field of view – the field of view is wider on the Osmo Action (145 degrees), while Osmo Pocket has the field of view of 80 degrees. Sound – in the video, you can also hear the sound both cameras record with the internal mic. And it’s much better on the Osmo Action. It’s cleaner and the internal microphone picks up much less noise. However, you can improve the sound on the Osmo Pocket with this external microphone adapter. Image quality and color – from what I can see, the image quality seems better on the Osmo Action. The footage seems sharper and there seems to be a bit more dynamic range. As for the color, it matches on both cameras. Battery – the Osmo Action has a removable battery, so you can have more batteries and make sure you have enough of them for the entire shoot. The Osmo Pocket, on the other hand, has a built-in battery. If it gets drained, you continue to shoot only if you plug in a USB cable. Filming options – the Osmo Action films HDR in 4K and shoot up to 240fps slow motion. The Osmo Pocket doesn’t have HDR, and it’s capable of shooting slow motion to 120fps in full HD. Build – the Osmo Action has two screens and each is larger than the Osmo Pocket’s display. The Osmo Action is waterproof down to 11m, while Osmo Pocket isn’t waterproof and it needs a case. So, what’s the verdict? Well, it all depends on what you want to shoot. The Osmo Pocket is useful for filming stuff that isn’t so extreme. It could be useful for vloggers, although I’d add the aforementioned microphone adapter to improve the sound. On the other hand, the Osmo Action is made for action filming, and when you’re exposed to harsh weather (just like any action camera).
