G-Technology has been a trusted name in portable hard drives for a long time. I’ve been using their ev ATC drives myself as my location backup solution myself. But as storage and speed demands increase, technology has to move forward. G-Technology was at NAB 2019, so DIYP had a chat with them about some of their location backup and editing workflow storage solutions.

G-Technology ArmorATD HDD

The G-Technology 4TB ArmorATD drive is designed as a rugged location backup drive. It’s a mechanical HDD, not an SSD, but if past G-Tech drives are anything to go by, it’ll still handle a fair amount of abuse. It’s USB 3.1 Gen 1 and comes in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities for $89.99, $119.99 and $169.99 respectively.

G-Technology G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series

Ranging from $149.99 up to $384.99, G-Technology’s G-Drive Mobile SSD R-Series are designed for backup in harsh environments but are also fast enough for editing. They come in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities, with transfer speeds up to 560MB/sec on a USB 3.1 Type-C connection. They’re IP67 rated, drop-proof, crush-proof up to 1,000lbs, shock and vibration resistant, to take any kind of punishment you might be able to throw at them.

G-Technology G-Drive Mobile Pro Thunderbolt 3 SSD

The G-Drive Mobile Pro SSD is a seriously fast piece of kit. Like the regular mobile SSD R-series, they’re built to be rugged and take a beating. They’re crush-proof up to 1,000lbs, shock resistant, drop proof up to 9.8′ and offer transfer speds up to 2,800MB/sec. But with speeds like this, you know they’re primarily designed for editing in the field. Big fast SSDs can generate a lot of heat, and the G-Drive Mobile Pro features an aluminium design with a custom enclosure to help dissipate the heat quickly without making the whole drive too hot to handle.
