Geekoto is a relatively new brand when it comes to lighting. They offered both a speedlight as well a portable GT200 Fresnel strobe. Now, they’re teasing a new GT250 strobe with a round head, and it’s actually compatible with the Godox X flash system. We caught up with Geekoto at PhotoPlus 2019 to find out more.
The Geekoto GT250 is a 250Ws strobe with a round head fixture on the front. It uses the same form factor battery as their GT200 Fresnel head strobe, and the two are interchangeable, although the battery with the GT250 is higher capacity. The GT250 with the supplied battery offers around 420 full-power flashes on a single charge.
Geekoto has their own trigger system, but they say that the GT250 is also compatible with the Godox X flash system. So, if you’ve already bought into Godox with a bunch of lights and XPro or X1/X2 triggers, you can just drop this light into your existing kit and it’ll be compatible. Whether or not it supports full TTL and HSS capabilities with all of the Godox compatible brands (Nikon, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax) is unknown. As with similar round head lights on the market, it supports magnetic modifiers and the kit comes supplied with several of them including a grid, diffuser, barn doors and gels. There’s no word on whether or not these are the same size as the Godox round head lights and if it’s compatible with the Godox AK-R1 round head accessory kit, although they do look fairly close and have a similar magnet layout, so it’s possible.
There isn’t really much information on specs yet. We don’t know how the actual light output compares, how well it spreads in a modifier, the flash duration, recycle time or colour accuracy throughout the power range. The light isn’t listed on the Geekoto website yet, so there’s no word on a release date yet. I’d be interested to see how this compares to the Godox AD200 or AD200Pro with the H200R round head. The AD200 + H200R + AK-R1 modifier kit comes in at $437 total. The AD200Pro with the round head & modifiers is $487. That’s quite a price difference. Of course, the AD200/AD200Pro does also come supplied with Fresnel and bare-bulb heads, too, which offers a lot of versatility. The head on the GT250 is not interchangeable. What we do know is that the Geekoto GT250 round head strobe will become available for $349.99 and the magnetic modifier kit is included. Various modifier adapters will become available for it, starting with Bowens mount, and then Elinchrom and others in the future.
