Not all of us are lucky to have large, spacious studios or apartments. So, you have to work with what you’ve got. In this video from Adorama, Miguel Quiles will show you how to create wonderful soft light in a tiny space, using only one light source.
Miguel photographs a model against a paper backdrop. If you want to read more about using paper backdrops in small spaces, check it out here. For this photo shoot, Miguel uses a Sony A6500 paired with a Sony 50mm f/1.8 lens. His only light source is a Sony HVL-F60RM flash with Profoto 3′ RFi Octabox. And the trick in this shoot is a white V-flat. The distance from the V-flat to the backdrop is about 7 ft, and from left to right it’s about 5.5 to 6 ft. So, it’s a pretty small space for shooting.
The way to make the light soft and flattering is to point the flash with the octabox at the V-flat instead at the model. The V-flat will bounce the light off and create a big, soft and beautiful portrait light. Here are a few shots from Miguel’s video so you see how it looks:
