One of the things I’ve found most challenging in my switch to Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve is transitions. Sure, there are a few that come supplied with Resolve, but when it comes to anything custom or fancy, you have to delve into Fusion – which feels like being dropped into an alien world after you’re used to Premiere Pro and After Effects. So, this pair of videos from filmmaker and YouTuber Alex Matravers has come in particularly handy for me. Alex released a couple of transition packs recently for Resolve, but he also made a pair of videos to go along with them that shows exactly how he created them and how we can make for ourselves, and customise them to our own needs.
Part 1 above keeps things pretty simple and straightforward and very easy to get to grips with for anybody who’s not delved into the Fusion side of DaVinci Resolve before. Part 2 builds on what we’re shown in the first video, by extending things with some slightly more advanced effects, but it’s also very easy to follow along.
If you just want the transitions without having to make them yourself, then you can download them for £3. But it’s worth following along with the videos (even if you do initially buy them) to learn a bit about how Fusion works and does its magic. Fusion might seem pretty complex and intimidating at first, but transitions like these are very simple to get to grips with. There are a lot more transitions you can create, too, besides those Alex shows in the video, just by experimenting a little with some of Fusion’s various effects.
