Long exposure effects with video can create some very cool results. This particular video from cinematographer Dan Marker-Moore is a particularly good example of that. Dan’s known for his outstanding time slice work, and very cool time related video effects. And in this video project for Toyota, he does not disappoint. It’s a very interesting long exposure type effect, that uses multiple frames of video to create a sort of time warp, amongst other things. Using nothing but standard After Effects with no 3rd party plugins, he creates a fantastic looking final result.
The basic process is rather straightforward. There’s actually two different ways you can do this. Be warned, though, the render time on both of these methods can be pretty intense, especially with 4K footage. To give you some idea of how intense, Marker-Moore’s render time was 48 hours. Yours will be more or less depending on the duration of the clip, how many layers you use or how many echos you set. And here’s the final spot so you can see how it all looks played back properly.
It’s a seriously cool effect, and a technique that has so much more application than just this one example. In fact, I suspected that this technique was used to create some of the sequences from this amazing Singapore timelapse video we showed you last year.
