Can artificial intelligence tell how good your photos are? Well, in its “Spark the Renaissance” photography competition, Huawei is about to use AI to rate your images, with a little help from a real photographer.

According to Huawei’s press release, this competition will “spark a renaissance in photography.” CMO Huawei Western Europe, Andrew Garrihy, explains that the company has trained the AI in the Huawei P20 Pro to understand what makes an amazing photo. He says that this innovation will help the company to “identify emerging creative talent across Europe and showcase their photography potential to others.” But other than the artificial intelligence, a Leica photographer Alex Lambrechts will also judge the images. There will be five themes over the course of the competition, and the photos you submit will be judged by Huawei P20 Pro’s AI. The company writes that it was trained on 4 million images taken by professional photographers and picture editors. So, the AI should give each photo a personalized score based on focus, jitter, deflection, color, and composition. Although this may be the first photography competition judged by AI, it’s not the first time that AI determines the quality of photos. We’ve seen it applied, for example, on Everypixel (although it sometimes gives rather illogical results). And while AI is certainly more and more applicable in photography, we’ve seen some pretty ridiculous mistakes so far.
