Nikon Rumors is reporting feedback from somebody who’s actually handled the new Nikon Z mirrorless cameras and confirmed a few things. They got their mitts on the new cameras during a closed-door event last week in Asia. This is what they had to say.
There are many similarities between the Z6/7 and Sony’s A7 seriesThe new Z-mount is almost as large as a medium format for some 6×6 SLR camerasHandling and ergonomics are perfectThe Nikon Z6 and Z7 have exactly the same body and use the same batteryThe EVF is fixed (I’m assuming as opposed to articulated, not broken)There are no scene modesThere is a green AUTO mode as well as the usual MASP and 3 user settings
Not having any scene modes is interesting. It means that both cameras are almost certainly aimed at professional users and not consumers.
Nice to hear that the handling and ergonomics is good. That’s been the biggest general gripe that most people have had with mirrorless cameras. That they’re too small, fiddly, with bad ergonomics. Even with small DSLRs, though, you can feel the same if you’re used to bigger cameras. I remember when it came out, the D7000 felt tiny in my hands after having spent a year with the D300s & grip. NR also says that both the 24-70mm f/4 and 50mm f/1.8 lenses have very fast autofocus. And that on test images, they showed some signs of vignetting when used at wide open apertures. Well, there’s only 6 days to go until an official announcement, and another leak or two between now and then wouldn’t surprise me. But, we’ll all find out what’s coming soon enough.
