Canon’s EOS R and EOS RP cameras haven’t quite seen the widespread adoption that they’d hoped for amongst users, although it looks like they might soon get a little assistance from RED. Newsshooter reported a teaser for the new RED Komodo camera. It was mentioned that RED would be posting about the new camera soon, after having recently announced the Hydrogen 2 smartphone. Very little is really known about it, but looking at a teaser image posted, it’s going to have a Canon RF lens mount.
A cropped version of the image in question is at the top of this post, but here’s the entire photo.
From looking at the contact points shown in the image, it’s not going to be an EF mount. For comparison, here are the mounts for the EF mount Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and RF mount Canon EOS R.
As you can see, they are quite similar, although the number of electronic contacts on the EOS R on the left is greater than on the EOS 5D Mark IV on the right. Specifically, the group on the left is four contacts, as opposed to three. And the RED Komodo teaser also shows the same group of four contacts. The RF mount does make a lot of sense, especially given that it still retains EF compatibility via the use of Canon’s lens adapters. Lens adapters which feature, amongst other things, a variable neutral density filter.
We do know that it will mate to the Hydrogen 2 smartphone – as well as the Hydrogen One, for those unfortunate enough to have purchased one. It was already mentioned that the Hydrogen ONE and 2 will both integrate with the camera. But beyond this, nothing else is really known about the camera. RED president, Jarred Land did off some clues as to what it’s not, though, via RED USER…
It is not DSMC3It is not a replacement for DSMC2It is not 8k VVIt is not a Dragon or a Helium or a Gemini or a Monstro SensorIt does not have an HDMI portIt does not use proprietary mediaIt is not a “module”It is not under $5k unless you own a Hydrogen. It has no XLR portsIt does not have a fixed lensIts body does not weight more than 2 pounds. It is not larger than 4 inches in any dimension.
Only time will tell when it comes to exactly what it is and what it offers, though. Jarred does go on to say that we will “probably” see it pop up more over the coming weeks and months. But in the spirit of discovery… perhaps I can still stay inside those rules and tell you what Komodo is not – Jarred Land [via Newsshooter]
