A new patent from Sigma, spotted by the folks at Hi Lows Note, describes three new full-frame lenses designed for mirrorless camera systems – the Leica L and Sony E mount systems. The lenses described by the patent are a 14mm f/2, a 14mm f/2.8 and a rather intriguing 12mm f/2.8. There is currently a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art series lens available for both Leica L and Sony E mounts, however, it’s essentially their DSLR lens with an extended barrel to fix the flange distance. The patent suggests a new replacement model could be imminent!

It’s not much of a surprise that Sigma is working on a mirrorless-specific version of its popular ultra-wide Art series lens, as they’ve been slowly going through their catalogue and making new versions designed for Leica L and Sony E mounts for a while now. But what’s interesting is that while Sony & Panasonic/Leica/Sigma shooters might lose a little on the aperture over the current f/1.8 model, we might see a wider 12mm field of view. As always, this is just a patent. So, there’s no word on when we might actually see a new lens being released, nor that if we do, it will use any of these three designs. Sigma might still have another trick or two up its sleeve to widen that aperture back up a little to match the f/1.8 of the existing lens. [via Hi Lows Note]
