Initially announced a few months ago, Affinity Photo for Windows has been anxiously awaited. Today, it’s finally here in the form of a completely free public beta. Hailed as the only real potential competitor to Photoshop, Affinity Photo’s Windows debut opens it up to a much wider audience. With the current cost of “free” lasting throughout the public beta period, it will be interesting to see how many are won over....
Text-to-image and text-to-video generators have opened up many new possibilities for still and video creations. We’ve already seen some pretty cool AI-generated music videos, often made by turning lyrics and verses into pictures. Eclectic Method (aka Jonny Wilson) has done things a little differently. He made a music video reimagining iconic dance scenes as AI-generated animations. And unlike the two I linked above, it’s not creepy at all – it’s pure fun and it looks really interesting....
Here is a fun little trick that photographer Andrew Tihi (facebook) sent us. If you are looking for a pure white backdrop, why not walk down the street till you stumble upon a bus stop. The light coming from the illuminated sign is (almost) perfect for a quick portrait. The secret is over exposing the sign, until it turns 100% white. In this case it was ISO1600@f/4 and 1/50....
Apollo astronauts were not only history makers – they were also darn good photographers. Still, some of their achievements weren’t captured as they deserved to be, with some photos being underexposed, blurry, or simply limited by the technical capabilities of the gear of the time. Enter Andy Saunders, an imaging specialist determined to bring Apollo images and films the quality they deserve. For his Apollo Remastered project, Andy digitally remastered and restore the original flight film and images from humanity’s first missions to the Moon....
After Apple admitted it has been slowing down old iPhones, many users were left furious. Now the company’s doing what it probably should have done much earlier – making the “power management” feature optional.Advertisements Apple’s mistake from the beginning was that it didn’t inform users when the “power management” feature was activated on their devices. The feature prevented phones with worn-out batteries from shutting down unexpectedly, but it made them significantly slower....
Apple’s new Mac Pro has been getting a lot of flack for its appearance. I mean, it DOES look like a giant cheese grater. Sure, on-paper, the specs look pretty good, even if it is a little overpriced. But is that “cheese grater” comparison really justified? And how well does it actually work as a cheese grater? Ok, so this totally isn’t photography related at all. But as we were one of the sites that made that comparison, I think it’s only fair that we follow it up with this amazing and hilarious experiment from YouTuber Winston Moy....
First announced last September, Aputure has now officially released its Light Storm 1200D Pro flagship LED light. With 1200 Watts of power, Aputure claimed at the time of its initial announcement that it was the “highest output Bowens Mount light fixture on the market”. While not the only light fixture at 1200W, it’s true that it was the only one at that kind of level with a Bowens mount making it ideally suited to your existing Bowens modifiers....
LED tubes have become tremendously popular over the last couple of years. We’ve seen them released by Godox, Nanlite, Digitalfoto and a number of other companies but Aputure seems to have abstained from the party… Until now. The company has now announced the new Aputure Amaran T2C and T4C RGBWW LED tubes along with a pair of 2×1′ (Amaran F21) and 2×2′ (Amaran F22) flexible and bendable LED panels. There doesn’t appear to be a promo video on the Aputure YouTube channel yet, but they did live stream the launch of the new items....
If you’ve ever tried recording in 4K, you know that recording uncompressed 4K needs some heavy guns. The most common solution is an Atomos monitor/recorder, and those are usually $1,300 and up. If you are shooting HD there are many capture devices out there, but for 4K… not so much. Epiphan wants to take a bite out of this cake and they launched the AV.io 4K. AV.io 4K is a small, pocket-sized capture device that conencts to your camera’s HDMI out on the input side, and to your computer’s USB on the output side....
The big news lately from the Adobe camp is Content-aware Fill for video in Adobe After Effects. But Adobe isn’t the only company who has been working on such a feature. Blackmagic’s latest DaVinci Resolve 16 Beta update also includes a similar feature, along with a slew of other major updates. We spoke with Blackmagic at NAB 2019 to find out more about the new features that have come to DaVinci Resolve 16 Beta....
The organises of NAB have issued a release over next month’s NAB in Las Vegas. The show was scheduled to take place between 18-22nd of April. Now, the show has been cancelled over coronavirus concerns. The press release reads as follows… This is going to hit a lot of companies very hard, who have been planning and preparing for their attendance at the show since NAB 2019. A lot of time and money will have been invested, but sometimes event organisers have to do what they have to do....
If there’s one thing that many of us would love to be able to do, it’s attaching a fully stabilised gimbal camera to a vehicle. It lets you get shots that would otherwise be impossible. But such a task is not cheap. Commercial rigs cost $20,000 or more and that doesn’t even include the cost of the actual gimbal. Bestboy Adam, though, has come up with a pretty neat DIY solution in this video that you can put together yourself for as little as $500, including the gimbal, using a mix of items from various manufacturers to which you can attach your DJI RS2 gimbal (or probably any, with the right brackets) to get that nice clean stabilised driving footage....
Visual effects are all around us in movies and TV shows today. Compositing different elements together, to create a final sequence that didn’t actually exist. It’s also become a lot more common with still images, too. But it’s often given a hard time, both in stills and the movies. The usual argument against them is “I hate visual effects, they look fake”. In this short film, compositor Roy Peker challenges that claim, and he challenges it extremely well....
Canon has released a number of new firmware updates for its f/2.8 and f/4 RF mount zoom lenses. The only update seems to be to add the focus breathing correction feature. This is a new feature in the recently announced Canon EOS R6 Mark II mirrorless camera. The feature is an electronic focus breathing compensation when recording videos. It essentially scales the frame to ensure that you get the same composition throughout the focus range....
Canon filed a patent for a 28-560mm f/2.8-5.6L IS lens just a few short months ago. Now, they’ve taken out the image stabilisation and filed another. Many believed that the previous filing was just another patent that would never actually exist in the real world. This new filing suggests that it might happen after all. It’s been rumoured for a while that Canon have been working on a replacement for the 28-300mm f/3....
This was one of the biggest complaints about the Canon EOS RP, and some of Canon’s other cameras, putting users off purchasing. That’s the lack of 24p (23.976fps) video. The EOS RP does actually shoot 24p, but only in 4K. It’s not there if you want to shoot 1080p. It’s not the only camera that lacks 24p for all video modes, either. According to an email send to DPReview, though, Canon says they’re going to be introducing 24p mode via firmware updates for the EOS RP, along with various other newer EOS and Powershot cameras – including the G7X Mark III, EOS M6 Mark II and EOS 90D....

Last month, Canon released EOS Webcam Utility Beta, free software that lets you turn your DSLR, mirrorless or PowerShot camera into a webcam. If you’re a macOS user, rejoice. the software is now available for your computer, too. When it was first launched, EOS Webcam Utility Beta was only available for Windows. After feedback from Mac users who wanted to get it as well, Canon has now released that, too....
In a recent interview, Canon’s president Fujio Mitarai expressed not-so-optimistic predictions for the future of the camera business. He admitted that Canon’s sales have declined by around 10% in the past couple of years, and he believes that it will get even worse. According to Mitarai, the digital cameras market could shrink by as much as 50% within the next two years. The interview was published on the Japanese website Nikkei, where Canon’s president talked about the company’s plans, as well as his predictions and expectations for the future....
UMG allegedly used one of Modu’s iconic images of Tupac Shakur in a 2019 blog post. The estate claims that the copyright info was removed and they’re now suing UMG for copyright infringement. The Estate of Chi Modu filed the lawsuit on 24 June with the US District Court for the Central District of California. According to the suit, UMG used the image in the blog post titled Best Tupac Songs: 26 Essential Tracks....
