In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, Leica announced the three winners of the annual Leica Women Foto Project Award. Like every year, this contest is a part of Leica’s initiative to expand diverse representation in the photography industry, to include all perspectives, and to empower women. And just like in previous contests, the winning images are thought-provoking and powerful in 2022, too. This year’s winners are Rania Matar, Rosem Morton, and September Bottoms from the US with their photo essays on different topics....

Lensbaby has today announced their new Velvet 28 lens for both DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. It’s designed primarily for landscape, adventure, travel and street photography and while there may not be a lot of that going on right now, it’s also aimed at videographers. As with Lensbaby’s other lenses in the Velvet range, the Velvet 85 and the Velvet 56, the Velvet 28 adds what Lensbaby describes as an “ethereal mood” to your shots with a sort of soft glow effect designed to help tackle issues with both flat and harsh lighting scenarios....

Photographer interviews can often be quite insightful. Especially so when that photographer is a world-renowned Magnum street photographer like Bruce Gilden. And then even more so when the person asking the questions is the equally iconic, and also a Magnum photographer, Martin Parr. Martin’s been doing a series of “Sofa Sessions” interviews with photographers recently on the Martin Parr Foundation YouTube channel. In this third one, Martin sits and talks with Bruce about his work and journey through photography from its very beginning....

A young actor Troy Akin has created an interesting called ModelBs. It’s designed like Tinder, only this app is strictly business related. It serves to connect models and photographers in a safe and efficient way. Swipe left, swipe right, and find an ideal match – but in the photography or modeling business. The users of ModelBs will have access to each other’s profiles. Like on Tinder, they’ll and swipe right if they want to work with someone, and left if they don’t....

Money is a sensitive topic among photographers, and it’s especially tricky if you’re new to charging for your services. Many photographers don’t want to sound like “bad guys” when determining the price, so they tend to devalue their work. Also, sometimes it’s difficult to determine what exactly your services are worth. More than 50 journalists were recently attacked while covering an anti-Pride event in Tbilisi, Georgia. The rioters reportedly attacked them with acid and beat them, and one of the journalists was later found dead. The incident occurred on Monday, 5 July. Far-right assailants protested against an LGBTQ Pride that was supposed to take place in the Georgian capital. The march quickly got violent, and the homophobic mob attacked 53 journalists who were covering the event....

Selfies are so frequent that it’s not easy for them to capture our attention any longer. But when a Curiosity rover takes a selfie… on Mars… well, that’s another story. The photo was taken in 2015, but it was recently shared on APOD, where it immediately caught my eye. The low-angle selfie shows the rover above the “Buckskin” rock target, where it collected a drilled sample. And although it’s just a machine, it kinda looks like some friendly robot snapping a selfie because it’s bored....

Perhaps not surprisingly, PhotoPlus 2021 has been cancelled. Originally scheduled for September 30th until October 2nd in the usual Javits Convention Centre in New York, it’s been pulled with just three weeks notice. Organisers state that this is “due to developments regarding the ongoing progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and related company-imposed travel restrictions”. The news was just sent out to press, exhibitors and attendees via email, and they say that for exhibitors who have made deposits for the in-person event, options will be provided in the coming days....

The coronavirus (COVID-19) has been affecting people and businesses all over the world, and it hasn’t spared the photo industry. After Canon temporarily shutting down some of its factories, now Nikon is delaying the launch of the Nikkor 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR lens due to “the global impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak.” Guys from PetaPixel got in touch with Nikon, and the company confirmed the delay: A month ago, Nikon announced that the Nikkor Z 70–200mm F2....

This is a bit of an odd announcement. Well, partially odd. Nikon Japan has introduced new price revisions for a number of accessories with “open pricing” for the majority of Nikon Nikkor lenses. The announcement comes with Nikon saying pretty much what everybody has been saying since the start of the pandemic. It’s a result of the ongoing global silicon shortage and the increased costs of raw materials. The list of products for which prices are going up seems to be limited to a handful of accessories and a couple of Coolshot laser rangefinders....

A number of Nikon D780 users have posted online to various online platforms about memory card errors they’ve experienced since the camera’s release a couple of months ago. Nikon has issued a firmware update to correct “an issue that sometimes prevented use of certain SD memory cards”, although they haven’t gone really into any detail beyond that. One Nikon D780 owner, JS photo on the DPReview forums, stated that he bought a pair of brand new Lexar 2000x UHS-II SD cards to use in his new Nikon D780 for a wedding a couple of months ago....

Nikon Small World competition recently announced the winning images, and they show us that lots of beauty fits into tiny worlds. But now the winners of Nikon Small World in Motion have been announced, too. These include five videos that show us the microscopic world in motion, and just like the winning photos – they are truly impressive. Nikon Small World was founded in 1974, so this year marks the 45th year of the contest....

So, it looks like the new Z mount 14-30mm f/4 S lens isn’t the only thing coming out of CES from Nikon today. They’ve also announced that three new pretty major features are coming to Nikon’s Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras in a new firmware update. And they’ve announced a filmmaker’s kit to take advantage of one of those features. Which of these features is the biggest will depend mostly on what you use the camera for....

In this day and age, most of us share our photos online on various platforms. Most of us use Instagram, some can’t get over Flickr (yup, that would be me), and we have and all sorts of online portfolios. Somewhere along the way, the number of views, comments, and likes became one of the measures of our success. But do we really need to have our work seen to be considered great photographers?...

Olympus hasn’t been doing quite well in terms of revenue. This started a rumor that the company is soon closing its camera business within less than a year, but it looks like it will remain just a rumor. No, Olympus cameras aren’t going anywhere, and the company itself has now officially confirmed it. OM Digital has confirmed that there is a product announcement coming on February 15th beginning at noon EST (5pm UK time) for a new camera. They’ve been teasing a new “wow” camera for a little while now and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the original and legendary Olympus OM-1. So, it seems like as good a time as any to launch the first powerful camera under the new OM System brand....

The Panasonic S1R full frame mirrorless camera that was expected to be announced sometime in March, although it looks now that it might be announced tomorrow, after the release of a Panasonic S1/S1R launch teaser video stating January 31st 2019. One of the features coming to both cameras is a High Resolution Mode. The camera shoots a set of 8 images and then combines them into a single super high resolution shot....

The Panasonic S1H is a full-frame mirrorless camera aimed primarily at movie shooters. Thanks to its stellar video features, it has made it into the “big league.” It’s the first mirrorless camera to be certified by Netflix. In other words, it’s the only mirrorless camera Netflix allows to be used as a primary camera on productions. And since it’s on the same list with high-end movie cameras, it’s also the cheapest among them....

Pentax has officially announced its new HD Pentax-DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED PLM AW lens. Designed for the company’s APS-C K mount DSLRs, the 16-50mm lens is the latest in the Pentax “Star” lineup and offers a field of view equivalent to that of a 24.5-76.5mm focal length range on a full-frame camera. The new lens features HD coatings to reduce flare and ghosting and a PLM pulse motor to drive autofocus....
