Many celebrities have been sued for posting a photo of themselves without permission. Now it’s Jennifer Hudson’s turn. The famous actress and singer posted a photo of herself to Instagram, and the photographer who shot it is now, of course, asking for damages. The photographer who took the shot is Fernando Ramales from New York. He photographed Hudson in late 2019, and a news site later bought the photo for the story from 21 December 2019, according to Page Six....

Nokishita’s at it again, stealing the thunder of camera gear manufacturers. This time, it’s Canon’s upcoming RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens, expected to be announced very soon now. And while there isn’t a full specs leak just yet, (although, the most important specs are all in the name), we do now know what it looks like. Looking at it, when at the shorter end of its range, it is extremely tiny....

Histograms are handy things. They either confirm that you’ve nailed your exposure or let you instantly see if you need to adjust. But, they can be difficult for newer photographers to understand. Leica is about to announce the SL2, the successor to the Leica SL mirrorless digital camera. But before the official announcement, a few photos and specs have leaked, showing us the upcoming Leica’s camera. A photo and a few specs were revealed by Nokishita on Twitter. According to a Google-translated tweet, “Leica ‘2998’ registered with the certification body was confirmed with the new Leica SL.” A few main features were listed in the tweet, and they are are “47 million pixel CMOS,” “CINE mode” and “4K video....

Last week, the World Press Photo shared with us its stunning Global Contest winners. And now, the overall winner has been announced. The World Press Photo of the Year for 2022 was taken by Amber Bracken, showing red dresses hung on crosses along a roadside to commemorate children who died at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. Other than the heartbreaking winning photo and the story behind it, the World Press Photo Contest has announced category winners in Stories, Long-Term Projects, and Open Format categories....

We’ve seen some pretty epic examples of manual photo restoration and colorization. But there’s now a website that promises equally impressive results. MyHeritage uses neural networks to restore your old photos and give them color. And judging from the examples, it truly does a pretty good job for artificial intelligence. The main goal of MyHeritage doesn’t have much to do with photography per se. “Our passion is to help people connect with their family histories,” the founders write on MyHeritage blog....

Thinking of a name for a child can be a pretty difficult task if you ask me. Famous NBA player Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha got a son on Monday, and they chose a name that can be interested to many of you photographers out there. Since the announcement of Canon’s Dual Pixel Autofocus system, introduced with the Canon EOS 70D, we kind of knew that Quad Pixel Autofocus would be inevitable eventually. Several new patents have been released over the last few years, including this one from 2020 suggesting that it might come with the EOS R1. Now a new patent from Canon about Quad Pixel AF adds more fuel to that EOS R1 fire....

German website Fotografie is reporting that Nikon have received a “cease and desist” from disgruntled German D500 owner, Andreas V., for falsely advertising the camera’s Wi-Fi abilities. While the camera does indeed offer Wi-Fi, it can only be utilised via Nikon’s new Bluetooth connected SnapBridge system. At the moment, SnapBridge is only available to owners of compatible Android devices, with an iOS version not scheduled for release until later in the year....

The development of the Nikon D6 was announced six months ago, and we were hoping to finally see it at The Photography Show in Birmingham this March. However, we’ll have to wait a bit longer. According to the latest news, the Nikon D6 is being delayed and it won’t be released before May current year. And the reason is, once again, the coronavirus outbreak. In December 2019, the specs of the Nikon D6 leaked, showing some pretty neat features....

Nikon has now officially announced two new macro lenses for their Z mount mirrorless system. The “normal” length macro is the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 50mm f/2.8, with a minimum focus distance of 16cm. The other is the Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S, offering stabilisation and a 1:1 reproduction ratio with a 29cm minimum focus distance. The 105mm f/2.8 VR S also features the built-in OLED display found on Nikon’s Z mount pro zooms like the 14-24mm, 24-70mm & 70-200mm f/2....

With as many sensors as Nikon buys from companies like Sony, TowerJazz, Toshiba, etc. it’s easy to forget that Nikon can and does actually design their own imaging sensors, too. That’s exactly what they’ve done, though, announcing a new, slightly odd square format 4224 x 4224 pixel CMOS HDR sensor that they offers “the industry’s highest level of HDR”. While the idea of a square sensor of this resolution and frame rate sounds like it would be a lot of fun for things like Instagram and other square format social media, though, it seems this sensor might be destined more for industrial use....

Well, it looks like we won’t have to wait another week between the final teaser and the official announcement for Nikon’s upcoming new Z9 flagship mirrorless camera. The fourth and final teaser just went live and Nikon has also posted an official Z9 launch event, which will apparently last the entirety of October 28th, starting at 8am Eastern. The fourth teaser hints at both the speed of the camera as well as its potential slow-motion video capabilities....

The OM-D E-M10 Mark IV comes equipped with a flip-down LCD with on-screen controls to help making selfie-shooting easier. Although, they they’d do this with a flip-down LCD when you’re typically going to be having it on a mini tripod or something that obscures the view vs a flippy-out LCD I’ve no idea. It’s probably not much of a surprise that Olympus (as well as many others) have started to go the selfie/vlogging route with their entry-level devices....

Panasonic has released a teaser for the Panasonic S5 mirrorless camera to be officially announced on September 2nd. The teaser specifically targets video content creators. The video features Lumix ambassador, Todd White and doesn’t really reveal much about the camera, except alluding to its video-focused capabilities. Not much is really revealed about the camera in the trailer, although they do show it sitting on top of the DJI Ronin-S. A mess of cables sticking out between them suggests that the two will be compatible with each other....

Panasonic has announced its new G100 camera (G110 in some regions) and it offers some very interesting features – like Nokia’s OZO Audio technology which allows the camera to listen to sound from every direction to pick out and record only what you want it to capture. It’s not perfect, though. In fact, there are a couple of points that have essentially become dealbreakers for me. There’s no IBIS. Yes, that’s right, no IBIS....

Well, this is interesting. It seems that Olympus (AKA OM Digital) might be looking towards the stars. A new Japanese patent describes a new Micro Four Thirds system with a built-in “astrotracer” feature. Essentially they want the sensor to track the motion of the stars so that you can get longer exposures at night without getting blur from the planet’s rotation. It’s a nifty sounding feature and it’s one we’ve actually seen before, although it’s perhaps not surprising that most people have never heard of it, as it was found in the Pentax K1 Mark II, amongst others....

Cleverly titled Focus, the photo was taken by renowned sports photographer James Gourley and focuses on the single bead of sweat between the famous tennis player’s eyebrows. The World Sports Photography Awards saw entries from professional photographers from over 20 countries around the world. They submitted more than 5,000 images across 26 categories, including Football, Athletics, F1, Golf, Baseball, Cycling, Urban & Extreme, and so on....

It seems that a potential Leica/Panasonic/Sigma collaboration might not be all that’s officially announced tomorrow at Photokina. It appears that Leica China has posted a photo and description of the new Leica S3 medium format camera to their website a little early. There isn’t really any other information besides this image and the blurb beside it, which reads (Google translated)… It looks pretty much just like the $19,995 Leica S (Typ 007) on the outside, but we’ve no idea what the differences will be on the inside....

It’s not that rare for self-proclaimed Instagram influencers to feel like they’re entitled to getting freebies. One of them asked Betrothed & Co for a $5,000 wedding photography package, and they wanted it for free, of course. The photographers said no in a brilliant, tongue-in-cheek response, but then the person called them “abusive” and threatened to publicly shame them. Betrothed & Co is a small UK-based wedding photography business. This June, its owners Frankie Lowe and Laura Dunning received from someone called Melissa, a PR person of an unnamed “Instagram influencer....
