Panoramio was an invaluable location scouting tool for me. I could zoom into an area I wanted to scout, and all these little blips would appear on the map. Each showing me the location from a different view. If I happened to notice a particular cluster in a given area, I could zoom in tighter, and quickly see a bunch of different angles. Quickly determine if it was a tourist spot, or somewhere a little more out of the way....

Between 2010 and 2013, I toured the world for the first time. After living in Australia and Asia, I returned home but always felt like my urge to visit and live in foreign places was still not fully satisfied. Back home, I started working and studying and after five years I wanted to head out again. Chinese lens manufacturer TTArtisan is known for very affordable lenses with a good price-quality ratio. The company has just released a fast 50mm f/1.2 lens for APS-C cameras. Since it costs only $98, I guess we could call this one a “thrifty-fifty.” The new TTArtisan 50mm f/1.2 is available in Canon M, Fujifilm X, Micro Four Thirds, and Sony E mount. On a Canon M camera, it gives the equivalent focal length of 80mm....

Well, it looks like the US Army aren’t too happy with DJI, after releasing a memo stating their discontinued use of DJI products. They quote “cyber vulnerabilities” as the reason, although they don’t say specifically what those vulnerabilities are. What’s interesting is that it doesn’t seem to target a specific drone. In fact, while it does mention “DJI Unmanned Aircraft Systems”, the ban doesn’t seem to be restricted to just drones, at all....

The US government has imposed further sanctions on Chinese tech brand DJI which is well known for its drones. Seven other Chinese companies have also been included in the sanction list. US citizens are now banned from buying and selling shares in the company after the US Treasury department added DJI to an investment exclusion list. However, as DJI is not a publicly-traded company the ban is being seen as largely symbolic....

Phones are great for recording video of yourself. The big advantage is that big LCD letting you see what you’re doing while you’re filming. But they also have that big LCD that you constantly stare at while talking instead of the camera lens. So, when you watch the video back, you always appear to be looking slightly off to the side of the viewer. Not at the viewer. Those using DSLRs, mirrorless or even point & shoots to vlog probably won’t benefit from this one....

As a lot of you may know, I like to use the occasional gel in my shots to add a bit of interest. Sometimes these gels are rich and vibrant colours that drench an image in saturation and other times I just want to add a little something extra colour-wise without overpowering the whole image with a synthesised coloured look. For a more subtle colour look you’ll want to use tones that our eyes are more accustomed to seeing, for example orange and blue tones are heavily present in our daily visual journeys already....

I typically tend to not venture out with my camera when it’s that cold, but it has been known to happen from time to time. One thing I hadn’t experienced when I had been shooting in the cold, though, is random lens softness. So, this video from Steve Perry surprised me a little. He noticed that he was getting very soft images on his Nikon Z9 when shooting wildlife out in cold (single digit °F) temperatures....

It’s not exactly news that Viltrox has been planning to expand its lens lineup, and two of the three new lenses designed for APS-C mirrorless cameras have now been released in Canon EF-M mount for EOS M mirrorless cameras. The Viltrox 23mm f/1.4 STM and 33mm f/1.4 STM are both autofocus lenses with a wide f/1.4 maximum aperture and feature a rugged metal construction with a built-in USB port for firmware updates....

Google Lens is an AI-powered platform that enables you to search using your phone camera in real time. It was only available through Google’s newest Pixel phone when it was launched last year. But today, the tech giant has announced that it will expand to Android phones very soon. According to Google, the Lens will now be available on supported devices from LGE, Motorola, Xiaomi, Sony Mobile, HMD/Nokia, Transsion, TCL, OnePlus, BQ, Asus, and Google Pixel....

With its July/August issue, Vogue Portugal caused quite an outrage. While the issue is dedicated to an important topic of mental health, the cover has completely failed in addressing this sensitive issue. “The Madness Issue” depicts a patient in what seems like a retro mental institution as two nurses take care of her. As it was probably expected, both the name and the cover image caused a strong backlash....

If you’ve been a visitor here for a while, you might remember Volta. They released the first version of their top-handle power bank in November 2019, but it wasn’t perfect. The idea was great. A few years ago, Kodachrome was “investigating the possibility” of bringing Kodachrome back. Sadly, the company gave it up and the legendary film never made a comeback. But hey, not all is lost: at least we now have a Kodachrome recreation from VSCO. The company went above and beyond to recreate the iconic film’s look, and they shared what it took to get there. It was a painstaking process, but photographers seem to be thrilled with the result....
