Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport has recently shown some love for photographers. They have made camera holes in several locations around its perimeter fence so that photographers can they take photos of airplanes without obstacles. The airport notes that the project was done in collaboration with local plane-spotting group YQB Aviation. They worked together to identify the best spots for plane-spotting photographers, so the panels could be placed there....

Canon has developed what was everybody thought to be impossible. And while it might not be the highest resolution camera sensor out there, Canon’s new 1-megapixel Single Photon Avalanche Detection (SPAD) sensor offers some huge benefits over more traditional CMOS or CCD sensors. The biggest being that it all but eliminates noise from your images. It differs from CMOS sensors in the way that it captures light. Whereas CMOS sensors use electrical signals to monitor the volume of light hitting each pixel in an analogue fashion, which introduces noise, before being converted to digital, SPAD sensors count each and every individual photon that hits it and puts out a true digital signal....

It’s been rumoured for while now that Canon would start introducing LCDs into their lenses. Last week, we even saw some suggestions as to what they might display, thanks to a couple of newly released patents. Well, now, all the guesswork is over. Canon have officially announced the EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens. Like its predecessor, it is a full frame autofocus lens with image stabilisation. The lens is slightly larger than the one it replaces....

There are reports that Canon is going to announce the upcoming EOS R3 mirrorless camera on June 29th, 2021. Yes, tomorrow. Canon Rumors initially reported the news, but now say they’ve received some information that it might just be another teaser. The latter makes more sense, as Canon said they would be releasing more information between the initial development announcement and the final official announcement and, well, they’ve not released any new info since that development announcement yet....

According to a report on PhotoRumors, the folks at CaptureOne are about to significantly bump their perpetual license cost for Capture One for Nikon, Fuji and Sony from $129 up to a whopping $199 with monthly subscription starting prices (for the annual-but-still-monthly-non-prepaid-deal) going up from $9.99/mo to $14/mo. The information comes from what appears to be a leaked press release stating that Capture One will be increasing its prices from January 11th....

Tubelights are becoming ever more popular. The last player to join the game is IWATA (whom we remember for their excellent mini panel). Actually, the mini panel was so good and ubiquitous that “IWATA panel” became a generic name for those mini bi-color lights. It seems that that panel was retired, but we were thrilled to learn that IWATA is now making tube-style lights. Drone company DJI has recently confirmed that it is no longer shipping its products to either Russia or Ukraine, in a bid to stop the drones from being used as weapons. The Chinese company will also withdraw support for existing drones meaning that Aeroscopes which help people find the location of a drone pilot, could expire. Now into its 64th day, the Russian invasion and war in Ukraine sees no sign of abating....

After a few months of rumours, leaks and speculation, DJI has now officially announced the DJI Mavic Air 2, and it has a few pretty significant upgrades over its predecessor. It boasts a 48-megapixel camera capable of shooting 8K timelapse, 4K video at up to 60 frames per second, HDR video, and a very impressive 34-minute flight time. The Mavic Air 2 seems to have all grown up in its latest iteration, seeing a Mavic 2-inspired design, looking a lot less like a toy than the original....

You might have seen some spectacular video footage recently of the latest volcanic eruption in Iceland. A new fissure opened up this month not far from the Mount Fagradalsfjall volcano that spent six months erupting in 2021. Professional photographers and drone operators have flocked to capture the event, but of course, mass tourism wasn’t far behind them. Any active volcano is a dangerous place, and having swarms of visitors, many of whom are not with guides, something was eventually going to go wrong....

In another instance of drone operator stupidity, 38 year old Stephanie Creignou was seriously injured when a 2.8lb (1.3kg) drone dropped from about 33ft (10m) in the air straight into her head with a velocity of around 25mph (11m/s) during the Challenge 5km Arc-en-Ciel race in Beloeil, Canada. TVA reports that the operator of the drone, Rosaire Turcotte, had been previously warned about his reckless flying, flew much closer to the crowd than was allowed, and didn’t have the required permits to fly his DJI Phantom 3 at the event in the first place....

During an Alabama-Arkansas game this Saturday, ESPN removed some camera operators from their positions in Razorback Stadium because of a bad weather. As a result, only wide-angle view was broadcasted, which made the players look like ants.
