What is the internet best used for? You could argue that it’s sharing cat photos. Along this theme, Samsung chose a feline subject to demonstrate their 200-megapixel smartphone sensor. And they didn’t just demonstrate how good it is, they decided to blow up the captured image and display it on the side of a building, in gigantic furry detail. Although the sensor hasn’t yet made it into the consumer phone market Samsung has evidently already decided to hype up the new sensor and wasn’t deterred by printing the image to a staggering 2,021 square feet....

Sennheiser has today announced its new MKE 200 on-camera microphone. Designed primarily for vloggers or anybody who sits there talking to a camera (like most people these days who’ve replaced real-world meetings with Zoom or Skype), it’s an unpowered microphone, meaning there are no batteries to deal with. Well, Sigma has now officially announced their new Sigma fp L mirrorless camera and… Well, it’s a bit meh, really. Sure, it has a shiny new 61-megapixel backside illuminated sensor, but it’s not the rumoured new colour filter array. It’s just a regular Bayer sensor. And like the Sigma fp, there’s still no mechanical shutter and no IBIS. It does retain the same form factor as the original Sigma fp, though, so fp owners looking to upgrade to the fp L should be able to retain any of their current SmallRig cages and other bits designed for the fp....

Sony has announced “Digital Filter”, a new camera app that mimics the use of graduated ND filters. It allows you to divide the scene you’re shooting into two or three areas and set exposure and white balance for each of them separately. As a result, you can get an image with balanced light when shooting sunsets and other backlit landscape scenes. In the video above, you can see how the app works....

It appears that a class action lawsuit has been filed in California against Sony. It alleges that the serial number stickers on Sony lenses are prone to falling off. While this doesn’t affect the operation of the product – unlike the other class action over dead A7 III shutters – it does prevent the owners from taking advantage of the warranty and getting repairs when needed or participating in product recalls....

Sony has officially announced its new wide-angle full-frame 35mm f/1.4 G Master lens for the Sony EF mirrorless mount – what Sony describes as a “small, bright 35 for breathtaking images” which incorporates “Sony’s most advanced technology”. It will be a welcome addition to Sony’s lineup for those whose f/1.4 options thus far have been only the Sony Zeiss Distagon T FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA, with a price towards which the new sony leans, or the Sigma 35mm f/1....

Could the supply chain issues possibly be coming to an end? Well, we’ll have to see about that but for now at least, Sony has announced that they’re able to resume production of 2019’s Sony A6400 APS-C mirrorless camera. Sales of the model were originally suspended in November 2021 due to the ongoing silicone shortage and supply chain issues. Now, though, it appears to be back. At least at the Sony Store, with regular retailers coming soon....

A lot of folks expected more from Sony during Photokina 2018’s announcements. The “baby A9” rumoured to come in the form of the A7000 was nowhere to be mentioned. Instead, we’ll just get better cat photos thanks to Sony’s new Animal Eye AF. But Kenji Tanaka, global head of Sony’s interchangeable lens camera business, has confirmed in an interview with Pronews.jp that they will once again start focusing on higher-end APS-C cameras....

Buckle up film shooters because things are about to get a whole lot more expensive. Or at least, they will if you insist on using Kodak film. And you live in Japan. According to National Photo in Japan, both 35mm and 120 films will see a price increase by as much as 40% in some instances. The price increase is set for January 16th, and as Digital Camera World puts it, even though the increases are happening in Japan, it’s highly likely they will roll out similarly in the rest of the world....

It’s common for animals to cosy up for the winter months and find a nice comfortable place to call home. It’s not so common, however, when that cosy nest happens to be inside the viewfinder of your camera! Photographer Joel Robison got quite the shock when he discovered his camera had been converted into his very own Spider Holster, with this little guy quietly chilling out inside his camera. Joel estimates that the spider has probably been there for around 10 days at this point, and is currently showing no signs of moving out....

Actress, model, dancer, and activist Leyna Bloom is making history along with Sports Illustrated. She has become the first Black, Asian transgender woman on the cover of Swimsuit, the annual magazine published by Sports Illustrated. Leyna was first announced as a 2021 rookie of the magazine back in March. But she had no idea that she would end up on the cover four months later. In fact, it was a surprise for her near the end of the interview with Tyra Banks, who was the first woman of color to appear on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover back in 1997....

Remember that a month ago image sharing platform 500px announced that they will shut their marketplace down? A closer look at the announcement by Redditor Ricky_Lee_Hasselhoff reveals that 500px are also killing their Creative Commons licensing option. If you are unfamiliar with Creative Commons, you can read about it here, but in a nutshell, it’s a licensing scheme that allows others to use your photos without monetary compensation. Here is the nice thing about creative commons: it allows putting restrictions on usage....

This is a somewhat limited bit not insignificant ruling. Techdirt reports that the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts has “sort of” decided that the Supreme Court’s Riley decision isn’t just for phones. It covers digital cameras, too. In the case in question, a robbery suspect’s backpack was searched. In it, amongst other things, they found a camera. The police searched it without a warrant and discovered a photograph of the suspect next to what was later to be a stolen gun....

Terry Richardson, former fashion industry star photographer, is now the focus of a new investigation by NYPD’s Special Victims Squad, according to the New York Daily News. They say that multiple women confirmed on Tuesday that investigators have reached out to them over the past few weeks asking to talk about their interactions with Richardson. This follows his dismissal by Condé Nast International, three months ago. The company publishes Vogue, amongst other leading magazines....
